During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Spreckels Organ Pavilion
Given to San Diego citizens in 1914 by brothers John D. and Adolph Spreckels, the ornate, curved pavilion houses a magnificent organ with 4,518 individual pipes. They range in length from the size of a pencil to more than 32 feet. With only brief interruptions, the organ has been in continuous use, and today visitors can enjoy free hour-long concerts on Sundays at 2pm, given by civic organist Dr. Carol Williams. There's seating for 2,400, but little shade, so bring an umbrella on warm days.
Knott's Soak City USA
Themed to replicate San Diego's surfer towns around the 1950s and 1960s, this 32-acre water park is San Diego's only facility of its type. There are 22 slides of all shapes and sizes, a 500,000-gallon wave pool, a 1/4-mile lazy river, and assorted snack facilities. The park is located about 25 minutes south of downtown, just north of the border line.
San Diego Model Railroad Museum
Okay, so it's not high culture as we know it, but this museum is cool and pleasing, and worth 30 to 60 minutes of your time, especially if you have kids in tow. Six permanent, scale-model railroads depict Southern California's transportation history and terrain with an astounding attention to miniature details -- the exhibits occupy a 24,000-square-foot space. Children will enjoy the hands-on Lionel trains, and train buffs of all ages will appreciate the interactive multimedia displays. Allow a half-hour to an hour for your visit.
Dana Inn and Marina
The Dana completed a $20 million renovation and expansion in 2004 which added 74 contemporary rooms in a three-story arc wrapping around an infinity pool. These rooms are a fair upgrade from the sleepy old Dana, but the old rooms, in two-story buildings, were spruced up at the same time. Some overlook bobbing sailboats in the recreational marina, others face onto the original kidney-shaped pool whose surrounding Tiki torch-lit gardens offer shuffleboard and Ping-Pong. You'll pay a little extra for bay and marina views; if the view doesn't matter, save your money -- every one of the old rooms is the same size, with plain but well-maintained furnishings. The new rooms are bigger and feature water views and reclaimed redwood beam ceilings. Beaches and SeaWorld are a 15-minute walk away (there's also a complimentary shuttle). Meals and room service (including poolside food and cocktail ministrations) are available through the new restaurants, Firefly Bar & Grill and Blue Pearl.
Beach Haven Inn
A great spot in for beach lovers who can't quite afford to be on the beach, this motel lies 1 block from the sand. Rooms face an inner courtyard, where guests enjoy a secluded ambience for relaxing by the small pool. On the street side it looks kind of marginal, but once on the property you'll find all quarters well maintained and sporting clean, up-to-date furnishings; nearly all units have eat-in kitchens. The friendly staff provides free coffee in the lobby and rents VCRs and movies.
Pacific Terrace Hotel
The best modern hotel on the boardwalk swaggers with a heavy-handed South Seas-meets-Spanish colonial ambience. Rattan fans circulate in the lobby and hint at the sunny Indonesian-inspired decor in guest rooms, which are named after Caribbean islands. Hands-on owners kicked up the luxury factor (and prices) following a renovation, resulting in a more upscale atmosphere than most of the casual beach pads nearby are able to muster, and the staff is friendly and accommodating. It's located at the north end of the Pacific Beach boardwalk; the surfer contingent tends to stay a few blocks south.Large, comfortable guest rooms each come with balconies or terraces and fancy wall safes; bathrooms, designed with warm-toned marble and natural woods, have a separate sink/vanity area. About half the rooms have kitchenettes, and top-floor rooms in this three-story hotel enjoy particularly nice views -- you'll find yourself mesmerized by the rhythmic waves and determined surfers below. Management keeps cookies, coffee, and iced tea at the ready throughout the day; the lushly landscaped pool and hot tub overlook a relatively quiet stretch of beach. Five nearby restaurants allow meals to be billed to the hotel, but there's no restaurant on the premises.
