During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Elk Rock Garden of the Bishop's Close
Set on a steep hillside above the Willamette River between Portland and Lake Oswego, this was once a private garden but was donated to the local Episcopal bishop of Oregon on the condition that it be opened to the public. The mature gardens are at their best through the spring and early summer. There's also an excellent view of Mount Hood from the grounds.

The Berry Botanic Garden
Originally founded as a private garden, the Berry Botanic Garden is now one of Portland's favorite public gardens. Among the highlights is a large, forestlike collection of mature rhododendron shrubs. There's also a native plant trail, a fern garden, and rock gardens with unusual plants. The garden is open by reservation only.

Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA)
The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA) was created as a resource for exploring and supporting experimental art and new music in Portland. Here, at the Institute's gallery facility, PICA presents visual art exhibitions focusing on contemporary trends in the regional, national, and international art scene. These exhibitions are always innovative and thought-provoking. At various venues around the city, PICA hosts performances by both well-known and less-established performance artists and musicians.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Portland area, including:

McMenamins Kennedy School
The Kennedy School is from the same folks who turned Portland's old poor farm into the most entertaining and unusual B&B in the state (see the listing for McMenamins Edgefield, below, in section 5 of this chapter). This inn, located well north of stylish Irvington in an up-and-coming neighborhood that dates from the early years of the 20th century, was an elementary school from 1915 to 1975. In the guest rooms you'll still find the original blackboards and great big school clocks (you know, like the one you used to watch so expectantly). However, the classroom/guest rooms here now have their own bathrooms, so you won't have to raise your hand or walk down the hall. On the premises you'll also find a restaurant, a beer garden, a movie theater pub, a cigar bar, and a big hot soaking pool.

Dolce Skamania Lodge
Boasting the most spectacular vistas of any hotel in the Gorge, Skamania Lodge is also the only golf resort in the area. Although golf is the preferred sport here, the hotel is well situated whether you brought your sailboard, hiking boots, or mountain bike. The interior decor is classically rustic, with lots of rock and natural wood, and throughout the hotel there are Northwest Indian artworks and artifacts on display. Huge windows in the lobby take in a superb view of the Gorge. Of course, the river-view guest rooms are more expensive than the forest-view rooms (which overlook more parking lot than forest), but these rooms are well worth the extra cost. There are also rooms with fireplaces available. The lodge was planning to add 59 new rooms in late 2001, so you might want to request one of these new units.

McMenamins Edgefield
B&Bs don't usually have more than 100 rooms, but this is no ordinary inn. Located 30 minutes east of downtown Portland and ideally situated for exploring the Columbia Gorge and Mount Hood, this flagship of the McMenamin microbrewery empire is the former Multnomah County poor farm. Today the property includes not only tastefully decorated guest rooms with antique furnishings, but a brewery, a pub, a beer garden, a restaurant, a movie theater, a winery, a wine-tasting room, a distillery, a golf course, a cigar bar in an old shed, and extensive gardens. With so much in one spot, this makes a great base for exploring the area. The beautiful grounds give this inn the feel of a remote retreat, though you're still within a short drive of everything Portland has to offer.
