During your Salt Lake City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Governor's Mansion
Silver magnate Thomas Kearns built this palatial home in 1898, sparing no expense to make it as lavish as possible. African and Italian marble and exotic woods from around the world were used extensively throughout. Kearns' widow deeded it to the state in 1937, and the 36-room mansion is now the governor's residence. It suffered a devastating fire just before Christmas 1993, but has been fully restored to its 1902 appearance (1902 was the year that Kearns and his family first moved in). The best time to see the mansion is in December, when it's elaborately decorated for Christmas. Allow about half an hour.

The Children's Museum of Utah
With more than 140 permanent exhibits, this is the place for kids of all ages to explore: Children can get their faces painted, pilot a jet, or excavate a woolly mammoth on an archaeological dig. The museum also features a child-size grocery store where kids can be both shoppers and checkers, and a room where shadows "stick" to a wall. A "color factory" helps children discover music, dance, and theater through colors -- they actually create color in the Chromolator and use the Bubbelator to play a tune. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Allow 1 to 3 hours. Note: As we went to press, plans and a major fund-raising campaign were underway to relocate the museum to larger quarters; call or check the website for the current location.

Salt Lake Art Center
Changing exhibits feature contemporary works by local, regional, and national artists. There are generally several simultaneous exhibitions in a variety of media, including paintings, photographs, sculptures, and ceramics. Allow at least 1 hour, and check the schedule for lectures, poetry readings, concerts, and workshops.

Salt Lake KOA/VIP
This huge, well-maintained campground is the closest camping and RV facility to downtown Salt Lake City. Facilities include two pools, a hot tub, two playgrounds, a video arcade, two coin-operated laundries, several bathhouses, a convenience store with RV supplies, propane, an RV and car wash, well-maintained grassy areas for tents, and large shade trees. It offers 14 instant phone hookups, 200 sites with 50-amp power, and a jogging/pet-walk/bicycle trail behind the campground. RVers who plan to hook up to the campground's water supply will need regulators to control the erratic water pressure. Bus route 50 heads east on North Temple to downtown sights.

Hilton Salt Lake City Center
This handsome, modern hotel has spacious, well-appointed rooms, an excellent restaurant, and a good location just 2 blocks from Temple Square and across the street from the convention center. Each pleasantly decorated unit contains either one king or two queen beds, a large working desk, a safe, an armoire with TV, two phones with dataports, and a combination shower/tub. Standard extras include voice mail, and two suites have whirlpool tubs. Guest rooms have good views of the city and surrounding mountains, especially dramatic near the top of the 18-story building. On site are a bar and two restaurants -- Spencer's For Steaks and Chops, specializing in steaks and chops, and the more casual Trofi Restaurant. There is a sundeck, conference facilities, an ATM, and a souvenir shop, and the hotel offers free newspaper delivery.

Peery Hotel
Among our top choices for those who appreciate the ambiance of a historic hotel, the Peery is one of the few truly historic hotels in Salt Lake City. Completed in 1910, it has been fully renovated and restored to its former understated European elegance, offering comfortable, tastefully decorated accommodations. The lobby is delightful, with old-style pigeonholes for letters and a grand staircase to the upper floors. Each unique, handsomely appointed room contains period furnishings, pedestal sinks with antique brass fixtures, a queen or king bed, and desk. Some units have refrigerators, and several suites have whirlpool tubs. The entire hotel is nonsmoking.
