Skyscraper Museum

If you'd like to learn more about the technology, culture, and sheer muscle behind it all, seek out this formerly itinerant museum, which will move into its first permanent home in 2004 in the 38-story Skidmore, Owings & Merrill tower that also houses the Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park. The new space comprises two galleries, one housing a permanent exhibition dedication to the evolution of Manhattan's commercial skyline, the other for changing shows.

The Frick Collection
Henry Clay Frick could afford to be an avid collector of European art after amassing a fortune as a pioneer in the coke and steel industries at the turn of the 20th century. To house his treasures and himself, he hired architects Carrère & Hastings to build this 18th-century French-style mansion (1914), one of the most beautiful remaining on Fifth Avenue.Most appealing about the Frick is its intimate size and setting. This is a living testament to New York's vanished Gilded Age -- the interior still feels like a private home (albeit a really, really rich guy's home) graced with beautiful paintings, rather than a museum. Come here to see the classics by some of the world's most famous painters: Titian, Bellini, Rembrandt, Turner, Vermeer, El Greco, and Goya, to name only a few. A highlight of the collection is the Fragonard Room, graced with the sensual rococo series The Progress of Love. The portrait of Montesquieu by Whistler is also stunning. Included in the price of admission, the AcousticGuide audio tour is particularly useful because it allows you to follow your own path rather than a proscribed route. A free 22-minute video presentation is screened in the Music Room every half-hour from 10am to 4:30pm (from 1:30 on Sun); starting with this helps to set the tone for what you'll see.In addition, free chamber music concerts are held twice a month, generally every other Sunday at 5pm in fall and winter and select Thursdays at 5:45pm in warm weather, and once-a-month lectures are offered select Wednesdays at 5:30pm; call or visit the website for the current schedule and ticket information.

Children's Museum of the Arts
Interactive workshop programs for children ages 1 to 12 and their families are the attraction here. Kids dabble in puppet making and computer drawing or join in singalongs and live performances. One of the few new hotels to debut in 2003, The Alex not only continues the trend of high style, it takes it to a new level. The hotel's theme is serenity and comfort, and that's a tough task when you are located in the middle of one of the busiest sections of Manhattan. Renowned designer David Rockwell, using his trademark economically sleek, moderne style, has created a soothing and very glossy retreat. Each room features furniture designed exclusively for the hotel, such as the four mobile pieces -- a chair, a low game table, a coffee table that rises to dining table height, and a nightstand. And all rooms, which range from large junior suites to one- and two-bedroom apartments, also feature state-of-the-art full kitchens with sub-zero refrigerators that are so cleverly designed it took this high-style innocent way too long to distinguish it from the other kitchen amenities. But who needs a refrigerator when you can order room service from the hotel's fabulous restaurant, Riingo ?You'll also find flat-panel televisions in each room and in the bathrooms, which feature rain-forest showers and Frederic Fekkai products. Efficiency is the key word here, and service goes out of its way to make sure they meet the specific needs of each of the hotel's guests. My only real complaint is that in their search for efficiency, the workspace, hidden inside a closet, is much too small. But why come here to work when there are all those toys and gadgets to play with?

The Phillips Club
Located in the heart of Lincoln Center, the Phillips Club was one of the first extended-stay hotels to open in Manhattan, but your stay doesn't have to be long to appreciate the hotel's many amenities. Offering spacious suites and one-bedroom apartments with full granite kitchens, the Phillips Club is less a hotel than a home away from home. The lobby is minimalist and maybe not as warm and welcoming as many hotels, but the staff is friendly and helpful. All units have that sophisticated New York City apartment feel and are equipped with big work desks with ergonomic chairs, sofa beds, and home entertainment centers; the nearby Tower Records store will even deliver videos to your room. The marble bathrooms are large, though not extravagant. There are washers and dryers on each floor, and though there is no restaurant on the premises, Balducci's, the gourmet grocery store located next door to the hotel, will deliver a full continental breakfast, sandwiches, or anything else they make to your room. Guests have access to the Reebok Sports Club/NY, one of the most exclusive and largest fitness clubs in Manhattan, which features 140,000 square feet of exercise space, including two basketball courts, an Olympic-size pool, and a 40-foot climbing wall. The apartment-like amenities make the hotel a good, though expensive, option for families or for anyone seeking a bit more control over their environment while visiting the city.
