During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Museum of Photographic Arts
If names like Ansel Adams and Edward Weston stimulate your fingers to do the shutterbug, then don't miss a taste of the 7,000-plus collection of images housed by this museum -- one of few in the United States devoted exclusively to the photographic arts (which, at MOPA, encompasses cinema, video, and digital photography). A 1999 expansion allowed the museum to display even more of the permanent collection, while leaving room for provocative traveling exhibits that change every few months. Photos by Alfred Stieglitz, Margaret Bourke-White, Imogen Cunningham, Paul Strand, and Manuel Alvarez Bravo are all in the permanent collection, and the plush cinema illuminates classic films Friday, Saturday, and some weeknights. Allow 30 to 60 minutes to see the collection.

Timken Museum of Art
How many art museums invite you to see great works of art, free of charge? How many of them have smiling guards who welcome guests as graciously as the Timken's? This jewel-like repository houses the Putnam Foundation's collection of 19th-century American paintings and works by European old masters, as well as a worthy display of Russian icons. Yes, it's a small collection, but the marquee attractions include a Peter Paul Rubens, Portrait of a Young Man in Armor; San Diego's only Rembrandt, St. Bartholomew; and a masterpiece by Eastman Johnson, The Cranberry Harvest. You'll find a spot apiece for works by Bierstadt, Pissaro, Corot, and Cézanne. Since you can tour all of the museum in well under an hour, the Timken also makes for an easy introduction to fine art for younger travelers (pick up a copy of the Children's Gallery Guide for $2). Docents are available Tuesday from 10am to noon and 1 to 3pm; Wednesday and Thursday from 10 to noon; or by appointment.

Riverwalk Golf Club
Completely redesigned by Ted Robinson and Ted Robinson Jr., these links wander along the Mission Valley floor and are the most convenient courses for anyone staying downtown or near the beaches. Replacing the private Stardust Golf Club, the course reopened in 1998, sporting a slick, upscale new clubhouse, four lakes with waterfalls (in play on 13 of the 27 holes), open, undulating fairways, and one peculiar feature: trolley tracks! The bright red trolley speeds through now and then, but doesn't prove too distracting. Nonresident greens fees, including cart, are $79 Monday through Thursday, $89 Friday, and $99 weekends; twilight and bargain evening rates are available.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the San Diego area, including:

Loews Coronado Bay Resort
This luxury resort on the Silver Strand opened in 1991, situated on a secluded 15-acre peninsula, well removed from San Diego and even downtown Coronado, 5 miles away. It's perfect for those who prefer a self-contained resort in a get-away-from-it-all location, and is surprisingly successful in appealing to business travelers, convention groups, vacationing families, and couples. Rooms offer terraces that look onto either the hotel's private 80-slip marina, or the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and San Diego Bay. A private pedestrian underpass leads to nearby Silver Strand Beach. Rooms boast generous, well-appointed marble bathrooms with deep tubs; VCRs are standard in suites, and are available free upon request to any room (video rentals are also available). Another highlight here is the Gondola Company, which offers romantic and fun gondola cruises through the canals of tony Coronado Cays. The seasonal Commodore Kids Club, for children ages 4 to 12, offers supervised half-day, full-day, and evening programs with meals; and pets are welcome, at no additional charge.Facilities: 3 restaurants; bar; 3 outdoor pools; tennis courts; fitness center; spa; Jacuzzi; watersports equipment rental; bike and skate rental; children's programs; concierge; car-rental desk; business center; salon; 24-hr. room service; babysitting; laundry service; dry cleaning.

Omni San Diego Hotel
San Diego's newest downtown property is noteworthy for the fourth-floor "skybridge" that connects it with Petco Park -- it's the only hotel in the U.S. directly linked to a major-league facility. Twelve rooms even have (limited) views of the field. There's also a signature suite decked out in baseball collector's items (trimmed in the Padres' orange and black color scheme), and the hotel's common areas are decorated with baseball memorabilia, such as Babe Ruth's 1932 contract with the Yankees and Joe DiMaggio's cleats from his 1941 streak. If you want to be in the heart of the baseball action, this is it. The rest of the year, this $124 million, 32-story high-rise competes for the business crowd, luring conventioneers with 20,000 square feet of meeting space and an up-to-the-minute business center. Rooms feature work desks, dual-line telephones, and 330-count Egyptian cotton sheets, while a sixth-floor rooftop terrace has a double-sided fireplace, an outdoor swimming pool, and a Jacuzzi.

Bristol Hotel
If you're looking for a basic business hotel with a sunny splash of style, you can do no better than the economical Bristol, which boasts a boxy, IKEA-esque geometric decor accented by energetic primary colors and an admirable collection of late-20th-century pop art from Warhol, Kandinsky, Lichtenstein, and Haring. Everything still feels crisply new from the 2001 makeover that rendered this formerly baroque property almost unrecognizable. Though it doesn't offer many on-site amenities to keep you around during the day, and the staff could be warmer, these brightly modern rooms are fun to come home to. Each morning a nice breakfast spread is laid out in the downstairs Daisies Bistro, which offers all-day dining and a cozy, after-work bar.
