During your Portland vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

CM2--Children's Museum 2nd Generation
Located across the parking lot form the Oregon Zoo, this new children's museum opened in mid-2001. With much more space than the old museum, this "second generation" museum includes exhibits for children from age six months to 13 years. Kids can experiment with gravity, act out fairy tales, or explore a magical forest. However, it is the Water Works exhibit that is likely to make the biggest splash with your kids. There area also six studios that will have changing exhibits and opportunities for exploring the visual, literary, and performing arts. Together with the nearby zoo, this museum now makes for an easy all-day kid-oriented outing.

Museum of the Oregon Territory
This small museum houses collections of historic memorabilia and old photos from this area. There's the obligatory covered wagon, as well as a display of Native American petroglyphs. Your admission ticket to this museum will also get you into the Stevens Crawford House, 603 Sixth St., a foursquare-style home that is furnished with late-19th-century antiques and looks as if the family just stepped out.

Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI)
Located on the east bank of the Willamette River across from the south end of Waterfront Park, this modern science museum has six huge halls, and both kids and adults find the exhibits fun and fascinating. This is a hands-on museum, and everyone is urged to get involved with displays, from a discovery space for toddlers to physics and chemistry labs for older children. Simulated earthquakes and tornadoes are perennial favorites. There's plenty of pure entertainment at an OMNIMAX theater and the Murdock Sky Theater, which features laser-light shows and astronomy presentations. The USS Blueback submarine (used in the film The Hunt for Red October) is docked here, and tours are given daily.Between mid-June and late September, Samtrak (tel. 503/653-2380), a small open-air train, runs between OMSI and Oaks Park Amusement Center. OMSI is also the departure point for several different boat cruises up and down the Willamette River.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Portland area, including:

The Lakeshore Inn
Considering that the town of Lake Oswego is Portland's most affluent bedroom community, this motel is quite reasonably priced. It's located right on the shore of the lake, and there's a pool on a deck built right on the water's edge, making this a great place to stay during a summer visit. Rooms have standard motel furnishings but are large and have kitchenettes. There are also one- and two-bedroom suites. The 7-mile drive into downtown Portland is quite pleasant, passing along the Willamette River. There are several restaurants and cafes within walking distance of the motel.

Governor Hotel
This historic hotel pays homage to the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and you'll spot references to the famous explorers throughout. However, the historical references are just the icing on the cake at this plush hotel.Guest rooms vary considerably in size but are all attractively decorated, with perks like two-line phones and voice mail. The least expensive rooms are rather small but are nevertheless very comfortable. Still, we'd opt for one of the deluxe guest rooms. Unfortunately, bathrooms are, in general, quite cramped by today's standards and lack counter space, although their tile work does give them a classic feel. Suites, on the other hand, are spacious, and some even have huge patios overlooking the city.Be sure to take a peek at the Dome Room, which is just off the lobby and has a stunning stained-glass skylight. Jake's Grill, a large, old-fashioned restaurant located just off the lobby, serves grilled steak and seafood. There's also a complimentary evening wine tasting Monday through Thursday.

Timberline Lodge
Constructed during the Great Depression of the 1930s as a WPA project, this classic alpine ski lodge overflows with craftsmanship. The grand stone fireplace, huge exposed beams, and wide plank floors of the lobby impress every first-time visitor. Details are not overlooked either. Woodcarvings, imaginative wrought-iron fixtures, hand-hooked rugs, and handmade furniture complete the rustic picture. Rooms vary in size considerably, with the smallest rooms lacking private bathrooms. However, no matter which unit you stay in, you'll be surrounded by the same rustic furnishings. Unfortunately, room windows are not very large, but you can always retire to the Ram's Head lounge for a better view of Mount Hood.
