Museum of Modern Art
After two years of being temporarily ensconced in Queens, MoMA returned to its original Manhattan location in late 2004. And though the address is the same, the space is now, with over 630,000 square-feet, almost twice the size of the original. The renovation, designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, highlights space and light, with open rooms, high ceilings, and gardens?a beautiful work of architecture and a perfect complement to the art that resides within. This is where you?ll find van Gogh?s Starry Night, Cezanne?s Bather, Picasso?s Les Demoiselles d?Avignon, and the amazing sculpture by Rodin, Monument to Balzac. Whenever I visit, I like to browse the fun ?Architecture and Design? department, with examples of design for modern appliances, furniture, and even sports cars. MoMA also features edgy new exhibits and a celebrated film series that attracts serious cinephiles. But the heart of the museum, as it was before the renovation, remains the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden, which has been enlarged; the museum?s new design affords additional views of this lovely space from other parts of the museum. My only complaint with the new MoMA is its very high ($20) admission charge for adults.

Museum of Arts and Design
Formerly called the American Craft Museum, this small but aesthetically pleasing museum is the nation's top showcase for contemporary crafts. The collection focuses on objects that are prime examples of form and function, ranging from jewelry to baskets to vessels to furniture. You'll see a strong emphasis on material as well as craft, whether it be fiber, ceramics, or metal. Special exhibitions can range from expressionist clay sculpture to fine bookbinding, and can celebrate movements or single artisans. Or just take your chances and stop in -- you're unlikely to be disappointed. Stop into the gorgeous shop even if you don't make it into the museum .

Museum for African Art
This captivating museum is a leading organizer of temporary -- and usually excellent -- exhibits dedicated to historic and contemporary African art and culture. In September 2002, the museum moved out of its old SoHo space and into a long-term temporary home in Long Island City (the same building where the Isamu Noguchi Museum is temporarily housed), which it will occupy until its new Museum Mile home is ready on Fifth Avenue between 109th and 110th streets. Weekend and evening programs include music and dance performances, art-making workshops, family events, and more; call or check the website for the current schedule.

The Michelangelo
Owned by the Italian-based Starhotel, this is the group's only U.S. property and it offers a very welcome dose of Italian hospitality in the heart of New York. From the moment you enter the spacious lobby adorned with Italian marble, you feel as if you have suddenly departed from the rapid-fire sight and sound assault of nearby Times Square. Off the lobby is a nice lounge where coffee and cappuccino are served all day and a complimentary Italian breakfast of pastries and fruit is offered each morning. The rooms come in various sizes and are curiously decorated in three different styles: Art Deco, country French, and neo-classical. I prefer the country French, but whatever the style, the rooms are all of a good size and include marble foyers, Italian fabrics, king beds, and two television sets (one in the bathroom). The bathrooms are well maintained and feature deep whirlpool bathtubs. Limoncello, the hotel's Mediterranean restaurant, offers lunch, dinner, and an innovative breakfast (try the polenta pancakes). Service is helpful and friendly, creating a relaxed, casual atmosphere rare in many New York hotels.

WJ Hotel
This is one of the few affordable hotels situated in the heart of my favorite Manhattan neighborhood for dining, Hell's Kitchen. Anyone who stayed here when the WJ was the Washington Jefferson won't recognize the joint after a recent renovation. The lobby has tripled in size and taken on a warm and welcoming ambience, with a friendly, snappily attired staff and more than a dash of designer style. Snazzy red-carpeted halls lead to rooms that are small -- don't say I didn't warn you -- but very attractively outfitted in a palette of soft grays. Nice touches include platform beds with generous cushioned headboards and fluffy goose-down comforters. The gorgeous limestone-and-slate bathrooms are stylish and relatively spacious, although some have showers only. Score 1 of the 18 king rooms if you can; they're roomy and boast a pullout love seat as well as a Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom. The Japanese restaurant in the hotel is just a sample of some of the different ethnic cuisines you will find in the neighborhood.

Murray Hill Inn
Housed in a renovated five-story walk-up in a pleasant and quiet residential neighborhood, the Murray Hill Inn is shoestring basic -- but there's no arguing with its cleanliness, which is key when judging accommodations in this price range. Rooms are tiny and outfitted with not much more than either one or two beds with motel-standard bedspread and furnishings, a wall rack, a phone, and a small TV; most rooms with shared bathroom also have private sinks (request one when booking). These Euro-style rooms share the in-hall bathrooms that are new and spotless. Some of the doubles have an alcove that can accommodate a third traveler on a cot if you're on an extra-tight budget. Rooms with private bathrooms are definitely the nicest; they're spacious, with new bathrooms and dataports on the telephones. Most also have pullout sofas that can accommodate an extra traveler or two. Don't expect much in terms of facilities beyond a pleasant (if tiny) lobby, plus a plain downstairs sitting area with a vending machine, an ATM, and a luggage-storage area. Services are kept to a bare minimum to keep costs down, but the staff is personable.
