During your Seattle vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Russian Attack Submarine
This Cold War-era Russian submarine is berthed just south of Washington State Ferries' Colman Dock at the south end of the waterfront, and the long black submarine is an ominous sight on this touristy stretch of Seattle shoreline. The sub, code-named Cobra, was built in 1972 and was in service for 20 years. After watching an introductory video, which provides a bit of background on Russian submarines, you board the sub for a self-guided tour of the main deck. An audio recording explains what you are seeing as you walk through. For anyone who lived through the Cold War, it is thrilling just to be inside a sub that was once considered "the enemy."

Seattle Asian Art Museum
Housed in a renovated Art Deco building in Volunteer Park, the Asian art collection places an emphasis on Chinese and Japanese art, but also includes works from Korea, Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Himalayas. Among the museum's most notable pieces are the Chinese terra-cotta funerary art, Chinese snuff bottles, and Japanese netsukes (belt decorations). One room is devoted to Japanese ceramics, while three rooms are devoted to Chinese ceramics. The central hall contains stone religious sculptures of South Asia (primarily India). The museums hosts frequent lectures and concerts.

Children's Museum
The Children's Museum is located in the basement of the Center House at Seattle Center, which is partly why Seattle Center is such a great place to spend a day with the kids. The museum includes plenty of hands-on cultural exhibits, a child-size neighborhood, a Discovery Bay for toddlers, a mountain wilderness area, a global village, and other special exhibits to keep the little ones busy learning and playing for hours.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Seattle area, including:

Hotel Ändra
Located on the edge of the trendy Belltown neighborhood and only a few of blocks from both downtown shopping and Pike Place Market, this recently opened hotel melds a vintage building with bold contemporary styling and manages to succeed even better than the local W hotel. The lobby scene at the Ändra may not be as trendy as at the W, but check out that cool video artwork over the fireplace mantel! Even the elevators here have plasma TVs, broadcasting CNN. The location, close to lots of good restaurants and happening clubs, makes this a great place to stay if you're in Seattle to make the scene. Rooms are done in cool blues and kelp greens, with lots of wood and stainless-steel accents, Swedish modern furniture, ergonomic desk chairs, faux-fur headboards, retro clocks, and flat-screen TVs. The suites even have wall-hung plasma TVs. Lights are on dimmers, so you can create just the right mood. Oh, and the hotel's restaurant is the newest offering from Tom Douglas, one of my favorite Seattle chefs. Don't miss it.

Days Inn Downtown
Conveniently located near the Seattle Center and within walking distance (or a free bus ride) of the rest of downtown Seattle, this aging three-story chain hotel offers large, clean accommodations. It has a combination restaurant and bar on the premises if you don't feel like going out.

Executive Pacific Plaza Hotel
There aren't too many reasonably priced choices left in downtown Seattle, but this hotel, built in 1928, offers not only moderately priced rooms but also a prime location -- halfway between Pike Place Market and Pioneer Square, and just about the same distance from the waterfront. Over the past few years, the hotel has undergone an extensive renovation that has updated the rooms and given the lobby a very stylish and contemporary look. However, the rooms are still small (verging on tiny) and sometimes quite cramped. Consequently, I recommend this place primarily for solo travelers. Also, be aware that the hotel has no air-conditioning, and west-facing rooms can get warm in summer. Bathrooms, although very small, have been completely upgraded. Currently, the rates here are only slightly higher than at motels near the Space Needle, which makes this place a great deal.
