During your Dallas vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Dallas Zoo
If you're headed west to Fort Worth, and one zoo trip will do, you'd be better off waiting (the Fort Worth Zoo, along with the one in San Antonio, are the two best in Texas and two of the best in the country). Otherwise, if the kids are clamoring for some wild animals, the recently renovated Dallas Zoo -- the oldest zoo in Texas, founded in 1888 -- isn't likely to disappoint (one feature, "Wilds of Africa," was named the top African zoo exhibit in the country). The 85-acre park also features a habitat for rare Sumatran tigers, a chimpanzee forest, and a monorail safari ride. A couple of hours spent here should suffice for the kids.

The Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Garden
Dallas may not be celebrated for its cool green beauty, but the area around White Rock Lake, and more specifically the Arboretum and Botanical Garden, is a welcome oasis. Just 15 minutes from the gleaming skyscrapers of downtown Dallas are nearly 70 acres of carefully planted and groomed gardens and natural woodlands, interspersed with a handful of historic residences, that meander along the banks of the lake. The Jonsson Color Garden features one of the nation's largest collections of azaleas, which bloom spectacularly in spring, and nearly 6 acres of chrysanthemums in the fall. And while North Texas is not exactly New England, October and November are as ablaze in color as anything you'll see in this neck of the woods. If you find yourself in Dallas during the torrid summer (or spring and fall) months, the Palmer Fern Deli is a secluded, shady spot where mist-sprayers drop the temperature at least 10° to 15° -- reason enough for a visit here. An hour is probably enough time to see most of the gardens, though it's a fine place to linger, read, and relax.

The Studios at Las Colinas
North Texas's major movie and TV studio -- where Walker, Texas Ranger and Silkwood were filmed -- offers daily tours of its grounds, including displays of movie memorabilia and hands-on demonstrations of special effects (from that memorable blockbuster Addams Family Values) and blue-screen technology. You'll see the Oval Office set used in Oliver Stone's JFK, as well as costumes from Star Trek and Forrest Gump. If you've been to studios in Hollywood or the movie museums in other parts, you've probably seen more and better; however, if you've always wanted to visit a movie set, you'll at least get a glimpse here. Tours last about an hour and 15 minutes.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Dallas area, including:

The Bradford at Lincoln Park
This residential-style hotel -- the most upscale member of this exceptional-value small chain that operates in Texas and Colorado -- may be the best deal in Dallas. It's where all of my wife's coworkers stay when they visit the Dallas home office. Popular with business visitors who stay for a week or more, the stylish and spacious suites are coolly decorated in muted tones, with fully equipped kitchens. (There are three different floor plans to choose from, but for most visitors the "Executive," the cheapest room, will be more than sufficient.) Conveniently located just off Central Expressway and near NorthPark Center and Northwest Highway, it's just 10 minutes from downtown (unless you catch rush hour, when it could take forever) and even nearer to the nightlife options of Greenville and McKinney avenues.

The Hotel Lawrence
Staying in downtown Dallas has suddenly become fashionable, but most of the hotels grabbing all the attention will take plenty from your wallet as well. The Lawrence, a historic hotel in a 1925 building near the Sixth Floor Kennedy Museum, is more about value than flash. Accommodations are straightforward and small but nicely outfitted for the price, with good beds and all the amenities most guests need, including continental breakfast and (!) evening cookies and milk. For the cost of a cheapo chain motel, you get a prime downtown location, a bit of history, and style.

The Corinthian Bed and Breakfast
B&B's aren't much of a Dallas thing -- in fact there are just four of them -- but the Corinthian is closer to a boutique hotel than a traditional B&B. And as such, it's a great alternative in Big D. On the east side of Central Expressway, north of Deep Ellum and near Swiss Avenue, the house is an elegant 1905 structure -- which once served as a boardinghouse for young ladies and was converted to a B&B in 2001 -- with a formal dining room, a handsome parlor (complete with the original fireplace and antique grand piano), a grand staircase, and a modern carriage house out back. The rooms are cozy and nicely decorated with a smattering of antiques, homey without trying too hard. Gourmet breakfasts are a source of pride.
