During your Detroit vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Afternoon Delight
Despite its name, Afternoon Delight closes at 3pm and it's a popular place for breakfast, with hearty omelettes and homemade muffins. Cafeteria-style lunches and brunches feature hearty homemade soups and sandwiches. Halfway between Main Street and the University of Michigan campus, Afternoon Delight is a popular meeting spot. The layout isn't elegant or always comfortable, but the food is reasonably priced, satisfying, and eclectic, with plenty of choices for vegetarians.
Hockeytown Cafe
Part of the Mike Ilitch empire, this upscale downtown sports bar is located in the same building as the The Second City Comedy Club, across the street from Comerica Park, and it capitalizes on the frenzy over Ilitch's Red Wings hockey team. It is garish and gaudy, with the world's brightest video screen and ticker scroll outside, along with a gigantic hockey puck and images of Wings legends. The inside is massive, memorabilia-choked, and always crowded; the beer is cooled by a seven-inch-wide “ring of ice”; and the food is uneven, eclectic, and more varied than the usual sports bar fare. The largest rooftop deck in the city hosts reggae bands on summer weekends.
Ja-Da
Ja-Da offers upscale soul food in a restored 19th-century building in downtown Detroit. The chicken is barbecued in Ja-Da's special sauce, which is also used to baste the restaurant's popular ribs. The fried catfish, homemade macaroni and cheese, and collard greens are all first-rate. There is live jazz each Friday and Saturday provided by top local and sometimes national artists.
Somerset Inn
In the heart of Oakland County's most prestigious business and retail area, the Somerset Inn is a suburban mecca for business travelers and their families. The luxurious hotel has its own golf course. It also has quick access to the Somerset Collection, Michigan's most upscale shopping mall, which includes Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue stores. Within a mile or two are the headquarters of many Fortune 500 companies, including KMart, Kelly Services, Budd, Sandy Corp., Meritor and Delphi Automotive. Plenty of dining and nightlife options are available both nearby and in elegant downtown Birmingham.
Casino Windsor Hotel
In the same complex as the Casino Windsor, this resort-style hotel is famous for its views of the river and Detroit skyline. Many restaurants, lounges and shops are available inside the complex. The entire hotel-casino complex is off limits to anyone under 19 years of age, so if you want an adults-only getaway, this is the place. The downtown Windsor location provides a short walk to other clubs, restaurants and attractions, and is a short drive through the tunnel to downtown Detroit.
Dobson House Bed & Breakfast
Corktown, less than a mile west of downtown Detroit, is the city's oldest neighborhood. Victorian-era homes have been refurbished by a new generation of owners. Most, like this rare Detroit bed and breakfast, have small, cozy rooms, and splendid woodwork and appointments. This home was built in 1887, and each guest room has a private bath. The location, near now-abandoned Tiger Stadium, is convenient to downtown and the temporary casinos, though the immediate neighborhood has few amenities besides a few bars and eateries. A fax, computer and printer are available, and the hosts can serve as great tour guides for Detroit.
