During your Houston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Heritage Society at Sam Houston Park
A couple of blocks from Houston's visitor center is this park, which serves as a repository for eight of Houston's oldest houses and buildings, moved here from their original locations. The oldest dates from before Texas's Independence; it is a small, simple cabin originally built close to where NASA is today. Another house was built by a freed slave in 1870. There's a church dating from 1892. The Heritage Society restored them to their original state and furnished them with pieces from the appropriate eras. The only way to see these buildings is by guided tour, which leaves every hour on the hour from the tour office at 1100 Bagby; it takes about 45 minutes. The guides are well informed and add a lot to a visit here. The Heritage Museum can be visited without taking the tour. It's free and features permanent exhibits on Texas history.
National Museum of Funeral History
Do you give much thought to how you would like to be remembered once you've shuffled off this mortal coil? Or perhaps your thoughts just naturally drift toward things funereal? If so, then this private museum is the thing for you. Its owner, Service Corporation International, is the largest funeral company in the United States, and it has obviously been at pains to assemble the nation's largest collection of funeral memorabilia. The exhibits include a restored horse-drawn hearse, antique automobile hearses, and a 1916 Packard funeral bus. You can see memorabilia and trivia from the funerals of many famous people including Martin Luther King, Jr., John Wayne, Elvis, Abraham Lincoln, JFK, Nixon, and many more. Other attractions include a full-size replica of King Tut's sarcophagus.
SplashTown
A 45-minute drive from downtown, SplashTown holds special events and live entertainment throughout the season. It gets really crowded here, mainly with kids from north Houston suburbs and The Woodlands.
Sara's Bed and Breakfast Inn
For the traditional B&B experience -- period decor, themed rooms, beautifully furnished common rooms -- this is the place to stay. Sara's occupies a large Texas Victorian house in the Heights. From here it's easy to get to all of central Houston. The house is immaculately kept and brightly decorated. Most rooms come with a queen-size or king-size bed. Several are inspired by other cities of Texas, including Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Galveston. The carriage house suite is extra large and has a king-size and a double bed. The hosts serve a full breakfast except on Mondays.
The Warwick Hotel
At one time the Warwick was at the top of the list of luxury hotels in Houston. Over the years, it has lost its high ranking but not its charm or its enviable location on the greenest, most attractive part of South Main, in the middle of the Museum District and near the Montrose area. Rooms throughout its 12 stories have lots of windows and offer good views in any direction. Most of the rooms are large; all come furnished in predominantly French pieces. The bathrooms are midsize and come with ample counter space. Service is good.
Omni Houston Hotel
This hotel is an island of tranquillity in Uptown's sea of commotion. Flanking it on one side is a broad expanse of lawn with a decorative pool fed by cascading water and adorned with a small troop of black swans; on the other side is the heavily wooded Memorial Park. You'd think that you're miles from the busy Uptown malls, but you're not. In contrast to the modern exterior of this 11-story building -- angular lines, bold colors, stark surfaces -- the guest rooms are pictures of traditionalism, with 18th-century-style furniture and bedspreads with flounces in neoclassical patterns. The rooms are large and come with a view either of Memorial Park with downtown in the background or of the pools, the lawn, and the black swans.Facilities: Restaurant; 2 bars; 2 large outdoor pools (1 heated); 4 lit tennis courts; health club; Jacuzzi; sauna; children's programs; game room; concierge; courtesy limo; 24-hr. room service; massage; babysitting; same-day laundry service/dry cleaning.
