During your Memphis vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Woman's Exchange of Memphis
Other chapters around the country sell cottage craft goods made by people who must work from home because of disability or other reasons. The Memphis organization does too, but also runs a successful tearoom that serves lunch on weekdays. A selection of three main courses is offered: classics such as salmon loaf, juicy beef tenderloin, or a vegetable plate. The $8 price includes a small green salad, choice of iced tea or coffee, and the day's dessert. Set in a charming house in Midtown, no fancy decor here, but you feel like you're a guest in someone's (large) dining room.
Brown Pig (The)
Somewhat out of the way, this little shop serves up hearty helpings of pork barbecue. The open kitchen occupies most of the store. Four tables for two line the front window, but most of the eatery's business comes from take-out orders. Along with barbecue sandwiches and plates, the menu features spaghetti, hot wings, ribs, catfish and barbecue bologna daily. On Fridays you can order chitterlings. If you do not already know what chitlins are, you might not want to ask; it might spoil your appetite. The restaurant also caters events, large and small.
Blues City Cafe
The atmosphere at this diner-style café is so authentic that the place was used virtually unchanged in "The Firm", the Tom Cruise movie about a Memphis law firm. Bill Clinton is also fond of the joint. The décor is intentionally weathered, with corrugated iron and glass blocks. Diner-style seating offers a great view of the crowds on Beale. The best bet on the menu is that Memphis staple: barbecue. You can watch big slabs of ribs being turned on the grill while you drink a cold beer. The prices are slightly elevated because of the restaurant's historic location, but you can still eat for less than USD20.
Comfort Inn Downtown
In a city that does not build many hotels and restaurants along its riverfront, the Comfort Inn provides a view of the Mississippi River from its nearby location, only one block away from the water. Situated on the trolley line and Court Square, the hotel's location on busy Front Street give it easy access to the Convention Center on the north and Beale Street on the south. The view is spectacular from the rooftop swimming pool on hot summer evenings.
French Quarter Suites Hotel
This place is a popular choice for newlyweds spending the night after their reception. You can sit in the lobby bar and watch horse-drawn carriages drive up with brides in beautiful gowns. However, if love is not in the air and the trip is all about business, then this place can meet the needs of the mobile office. Each room includes two-person whirlpools and French decor. Jazz music is featured in the bar on weekends, while the nearby theaters, restaurants and shopping of Overton Square provide additional reasons to choose this all-suite hotel.
Lowenstein-Long House
This quaint bed and breakfast is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of Memphis' Victorian Village. Built in 1901 and renovated in 1983, this house sits on a beautiful one-acre lot, providing a pleasant and cozy atmosphere to those spending a few days or a few weeks. Each room has a queen-size bed and a private bath/shower. A crib is available upon request. Reservations are required for a minimum two-night stay.
