During your Memphis vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Cozy Corner
Do not let the unlikely location put you off: the specialties here are worth it. This place is a Memphis tradition, and you may have to fight the regulars for a table or a seat at the counter. The barbecued Cornish game hens are the specialty here, perfectly cooked and succulent. Other choices include ribs and pork sandwiches. Cozy Corner is indeed cozy, but also casual. Everything is served on paper plates; the plastic cutlery can make eating a bit of a struggle, but fingers are allowed. No smoking is allowed in the restaurant, and no alcoholic beverages are served.
Shelby's New York Deli
A variety of large sandwiches and other deli items are available here all day, along with an evening buffet. The sandwiches are of the traditional deli-style variety, and include pastrami and corned beef with sides of coleslaw and potato salad. On the buffet, you will find short ribs, potato pancakes and matzo ball soup. The food is kosher, and therefore there are no dairy products. A children's menu is also available. The interior is clean and warm, with fresh flowers on every table. Customers order food from the counter, except on Sundays, when there is table service.
Interstate BBQ
The huge BBQ sandwich here is the favorite choice of many and makes an inexpensive lunch by itself. Beef or pork ribs come with beans, slaw or potato salad. (You can get beef ribs in Memphis, but you are likely to get odd reactions when you order them—to locals, "barbecue" means "pork.") The BBQ spaghetti (pasta with barbecue meat and sauce on top) is served with slaw and bread. With most business being take-out, the dining room is small and functional. If you do choose to eat at the restaurant, you will find that the dress is decidedly casual, as are the table manners—the only way to eat ribs is with your fingers.
Wellesley Inn and Suites
If you are going to spend much time in your room, request one with a view of the lake in back. It provides a tranquil setting to this bustling business and shopping district. This no-nonsense hotel offers a comfortable stay for business travelers, and long-term rates are available. Located in the Horizon Business Center, it offers easy access to Interstate 40 and Germantown Parkway North. Many shopping centers are close by along with the upscale Wolfchase Galleria Mall. Numerous restaurants are within a few minutes drive.
Holiday Inn Select
This ideal location is directly across the street from the historic Peabody Hotel, next door to The Rendezvous (Memphis' best-known barbecue restaurant) and two blocks from Beale Street, with its jazz and blues nightclubs. The rooms are pretty much standard fare, but are comfortable and feature numerous amenities for the business traveler including a work desk. An executive floor is also available. Watch the horse-drawn carriages go by from your room window, or hop into one for a leisurely tour around the River City.
King's Cottage, Bed and Breakfast Inn
This lodging only has two rooms, but one of them is a family room with bunk beds and even a crib and changing table. Set in the Evergreen Historic District in Midtown, it is off the main roads but convenient to Overton Park, the Memphis Zoo, theaters and museums. Each bedroom has an entertainment center; guests can also use the kitchen and the front porch swing, and a number of videos and books are available to borrow. There is a $5 per night charge for small, housebroken pets. Prearranged transportation to and from the airport is available for $25.
