During your Memphis vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Morocco Café
This café is owned and run by a former Jerusalem restaurateur, and his Memphian wife. The food is authentic and fun. Flavors are strong, with garlic and lemon sparking the taste of salads such as hummus, and tabbouleh as well as lentil soup and the rotisseried shawerma platters of beef or lamb. Desserts include baklava and fruit custard with chocolate sauce. No alcoholic beverages served, bring your own for a small corkage fee. The small dining room has a nice atmosphere with tablecloths and formal place settings. At lunch, diners are mostly faculty from the University of Memphis; at night, local residents.
Cafe Max
A popular East Memphis destination for a seafood dinner, house specialties include Maine lobster, Alaskan king crab and Max's special stew. For those with a big appetite, there are two serving bars heaped with shrimp and oysters. For those with a taste for something other than seafood, this bistro also offers a variety of Northern Italian-style pastas, grill selections, and a full bar. On the weekends, try the brunch. The atmosphere is friendly and casual. A private dining room is available.
Flying Saucer Draught Emporium
The food here is designed to complement the beer. Appetizers include the Beer Cheese Soup, hot tamales, sausage quesadillas, sausage and cheese plates, while sandwiches fill out the menu. One of the rooms contains a large bar and wooden tables and chairs; the other room has pool tables and a sports-bar atmosphere. The most popular place to eat and drink is on the wrap-around patio at the windows. Cigar smoking is encouraged on the patio, and the restaurant offers a cigar list with choices ranging from USD2.50-USD17. The restaurant features live music on weekends and is in the heart of the tourist district, so there are usually plenty of chances for people-watching.
Radisson Hotel Memphis
In virtually the same location as the Peabody Hotel but with rooms at almost half the price, this place is a great value. Walk two blocks to Beale Street to eat in the Elvis Presley restaurant, listen to some great blues at B.B. King's, then have a drink in the Peabody lobby while you watch the socialites and prom-goers go by. Or instead, just hang out in the rooftop swimming pool and Jacuzzi.
Adam's Mark Hotel
The hotel is set well off the Interstate 240 perimeter around Memphis and overlooks a wooded area. The tall cylindrical structure with a blue glass exterior is an east Memphis landmark. The lobby bar with its live jazz music is one of the hottest spots in East Memphis, and the restaurant's wait staff often breaks into song while shuttling plates to the kitchen. With all the amenities of a luxury hotel, the Adam's Mark is very popular with visitors.
Courtyard-Park Avenue
Located near a number of company headquarters and the St. Francis Hospital, this hotel is just outside the perimeter of freeway I-240. With the light, airy decor and the Victorian gazebo in the garden, it seems more like a country resort than a city hotel. The East Memphis location means getting there is easy, and driving in the area is relatively stress free, with the notable exception of rush hour. A shopping center next door with banking, photo developing and restaurants makes this a convenient location.
