P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center
If you're interested in contemporary art that's too cutting-edge for most museums, don't miss this MoMA affiliate museum. Originally a public school (hence the name), this is the world's largest institution exhibiting contemporary art from America and abroad. You can expect to see a kaleidoscopic array of works from artists ranging from Jack Smith to Julian Schnabel; the museum is particularly well known for large-scale exhibitions by artists such as James Turrell.
Battery Park
As you traverse Manhattan's concrete canyons, it's sometimes easy to forget that you're actually on an island. But here, at Manhattan's southernmost tip, you get the very real sense that just out past Liberty, Ellis, and Staten islands is the vast Atlantic Ocean.The 21-acre park is named for the cannons built to defend residents after the American Revolution. Castle Clinton National Monument (the place to purchase tickets for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferry; see listings earlier in this chapter) was built as a fort before the War of 1812, though it was never used as such. The 22-ton bronze sphere by Fritz Koenig that was recovered from the rubble of the World Trade Center, where it stood on the plaza between the two Twin Towers as a symbol of global peace, now stands -- severely damaged but still whole. This may be the finest place in the city to pay tribute to those who were lost.Besides the requisite T-shirt vendors and hot-dog carts, you'll find several statues and memorials scattered throughout the park. This is quite the civilized park, with lots of STAY OFF THE GRASS! signs and Wall Streeters eating deli sandwiches on the many park benches. Pull up your own bench for a good view out across the harbor.
New York Waterway
New York Waterway, the nation's largest privately held ferry service and cruise operator, like Circle Line, also does the 35-mile trip around Manhattan, but does it in 2 hours, taking in all the same sights. They also offer a staggering amount of different sightseeing options, including a very good 90-minute New York Harbor Cruise, a Romantic Twilight Cruise, a Friday Dance Party Cruise, and Baseball Cruises to Mets and Yankee games.
The Lombardy
If the Sherry-Netherland sounds divine but you just can't afford it, book into the lovely Lombardy instead. This mostly suite hotel was built in the 1920s by William Randolph Hearst for his mistress, silent film star Marion Davies, and it still feels like a grand New York apartment house. In fact, just like at the Sherry, the apartments are individually owned, individually decorated co-ops, which gives you the best of both worlds: genuine luxury apartment living, plus a full spectrum of hotel services.While studios are available, the one-bedroom suites are far superior in both size and decor. Decor runs the gamut from classic to contemporary. The one-bedrooms average 850 square feet, and almost all have been gorgeously renovated in recent years. Studios often fall short in the style department; still, they offer a lot of space and comfort for your dollar, since they're roughly twice the size of your average hotel room, and owners are required to keep them up to snuff. All apartments have fully outfitted galley kitchens; all have fridges and microwaves, most have coffeemakers, and many have stovetops and/or dishwashers. Bathrooms are usually marble and always very nice, but not large (a vestige of the building's age); closets, on the other hand, are mammoth.The hotel is beautifully run by a longtime general manager and fabulously attentive white-gloved staff who are fiercely committed to this jewel of a hotel.
Wall Street Inn
With the demise of the Regent Wall Street, this intimate hotel is now the preferred choice for those working on the Street. But it's also a good choice for visitors who don't want to work. This intimate, seven-story hotel is ideal for those who want a Lower Manhattan location without corporate blandness. The lovely early American interiors boast a pleasing freshness. The hotel is warm, comforting, and serene, and the friendly, professional staff offers the kind of personalized service you won't get from a chain. Rooms aren't huge, but the bedding is top-quality and all the conveniences are at hand. Rooms ending in "01" are smallest; seventh-floor rooms are best, as the bathrooms have extra counter space and whirlpool tubs.Vacationers who don't mind the weekend quiet of Wall Street will find amazing deals once the execs go home: Rates can drop as low as $159 on weekend nights, and the staff will assign you the best available room when you check in.
Chelsea Lodge
Housed in a lovely brownstone on a landmark block in the heart of Chelsea, this small hotel is utterly charming and a terrific value -- arguably the best in the city for budget-minded travelers. Impeccable renovations have restored original woodwork to mint condition. The beds are the finest and best outfitted I've seen in this price category.The only place with a similar grown-up sensibility for the same money is Greenwich Village's Larchmont , but there, all bathroom facilities are shared; at Chelsea Lodge, each room has its own sink and in-room shower stall, so you only have to share a cute toilet room with your neighbors. I won't kid you -- rooms are petite, the open closets are small, and beds are full-size (queens wouldn't cut it). But considering the stylishness, the amenities, and the great neighborhood, you'd be hard-pressed to do better for the money. Best for couples rather than shares. Tip: Try to book no. 2A, which is bigger than most, or one of the first-floor rooms, whose high ceilings make them feel more spacious.
