During your San Francisco vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Cher's Grill House and Take-Out
No, the name does not refer to the singer/actress, though the food here certainly has star quality. The decor, such as it is, can best be described as generic, with nondescript tables and chairs, a counter where you place your order, and a few forgettable pictures on the wall. No matter. The place is packed with Filippino ex-pats and others from all over the city who love the food here. From the heady barbecue pork served satay-style to the flavorful adobo chicken to spicy, Spanish-inspired longuiza sausage, it is all authentically prepared and served in huge portions. Cash only.

Caffe Union
An upscale shopping street deserves an upscale cafe that is quaint and welcoming in a posh sort of way. This place fills the bill with warm wood and pale colors and a friendly wait staff that never rushes you over your coffee and pie. Take a break from shopping with one of the delicious sandwiches made to order or a bowl of hearty house-made soup. The quiches in classic, spinach and other varieties are a flavorful way to recover your energies for another round of window shopping or a quick bite after a flick at the Metro Theater.

Avenue Grill (The)
An upscale take on regional American cuisine is served here in an authentic American setting. The casually chic diner with counter service and a small full service bar is housed in a converted gas station for an effect that is whimsical and nostalgic. The food may inspire some nostalgia, too. The menu offers meat loaf with gravy and garlic mashed potatoes, shrimp croquettes with roasted pepper aioli, as well as grilled steak and fish dishes. Seasonal specials round out the entrees. The noise level can get high here, but the food is delicious and the wine list, heavy on California vintages, makes up for that as does a personable wait staff.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the San Francisco area, including:

Vintage Court
Though located in the heart of The City, this charming hotel gives guests a taste of the Wine Country. With its warm, firelit lobby, jade and rose interiors and peaceful ambiance, this hotel is reminiscent of a Napa Valley inn. This is the only wine-themed hotel in San Francisco and has close ties to local wineries. Its centralized location provides easy access to all other local treasures as well.

San Francisco Residence Club
Originally an apartment building built in 1906, this building was destroyed in the Great Earthquake and Fire, restored, then converted into a residence club in the 1940s. For 23 years, the Donahue Family has owned it and plan to keep it a secure and quiet haven. That may be why tourists, business travelers, and students from all over the world have chosen to stay here. If you are on an extended trip, this may be the right place to call "home" for awhile. The rooms are comfortable, clean, and individual, though some have shared bath. There are amazing views of the Bay, Angel Island, and Twin Peaks from some of the rooms. The Financial District, Chinatown, and Union Square are in close proximity. Rates are daily, weekly, or monthly. Cash only.

Hyatt Regency (Embarcadero)
Located at the Embarcadero Center in the heart of The City's Financial District, this hotel offers guests luxury accommodations within a stone's throw of San Francisco's major business and shopping centers. Elegantly renovated several years back, the interior of the hotel boasts a giant fountain on the second floor and a live jazz pianist in the open lounge. The ambience is serene and elegant, far from the madding crowd. The Sunday brunch in the dramatic atrium draws locals as well as travelers.
