During your Detroit vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Dakota Inn Rathskeller
Steeped in tradition, the Dakota Inn has been serving hearty German food and beer since 1933. Sauerbraten with homemade spatzle, potato pancakes with apple sauce and sour cream, and a combination plate of bratwurst and knackwurst served with potato salad and homemade sauerkraut are among the specialties, with chicken and fish for those who crave a lighter fare. Weekends feature sing-alongs and dancing to live bands.
Moti Mahal
With a veteran North Indian chef who comes to Detroit after years of cooking experience in London and Montreal, and the area's largest selection of Indian foods (over 250 items on the menu), Moti Mahal has much to offer. Persian shrimp dhansak is a favorite as are the various baltis, the Punjabi tandoori, the Madras-style curries and the low prices. Nine different types of Indian bread are offered, all first-rate.
Traffic Jam & Snug
Eclectic, tongue-in-cheek and enterprising, this rambling, multi-roomed, oft-expanded corner eatery is like a fern bar gone mad. The eccentric menu features prize-winning cheeses, breads, beer and ice cream made on the premises. It's Michigans first licensed brew pup. In the late 1960s, the Snug was an ice cream parlor, the Traffic Jam a bar, then they combined into a Wayne State University/Medical Center hangout and went a bit upscale without losing a sense of anarchistic humor. The food features adventurous embellishments on American standard soups, sandwiches and salads. Inside the plain brick exterior are plenty of distractions and surprises in the pseudo-trendy décor.
Courtyard by Marriott Downtown Detroit
Generals Motors Corporation co-manages the 250-room Courtyard Marriott in the Millender Center, adjacent to GM's new world headquarters in the Renaissance Center. It was the one of the first Courtyards to open in an urban center, but has all the amenities one would find in a suburban Marriott. The connected office-retail complexes of the Millender Center and Renaissance Center provide all the food and shops a traveler would need without ever venturing outdoors. It's conveniently located and service-oriented if not distinctive. Greektown and plenty of nightlife options are just a short walk away.
Embassy Suites Detroit Livonia
This chain hotel is located in the I-275 corridor, a commercial center just 20 minutes from Metro Airport and within a half-hour drive of Ann Arbor, downtown Detroit, Oakland County and many other west-side locations. The suites are well equipped for business stays of several days or more. The lobby has a pleasant atrium with a rock garden and flowing water. Generous breakfasts and free afternoon drinks are included, and a restaurant and lounge are on the premises. The hotels resides on a suburban cul-de-sac, and you cannot walk anywhere from here, but shopping malls, restaurants and golf courses are a short drive away.
Radisson Riverfront Windsor
One of two high-rise chain hotels on the Windsor riverfront, the Radisson has indoor access to the Cleary Convention Centre and offers wonderful views of the Detroit skyline. All of its 207 rooms are fully accessible to mobility-impaired guests. The Windsor Casino and downtown shops, galleries and restaurants, as well as Dieppe Park, are within a short walk. The hotel offers a full range of chain amenities but nonetheless retains something of a Continental feel. It frequently hosts overflow from business conventions meeting in downtown Detroit.
