During your Denver vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Pete's Central I
Pete's is small in space but its interior is refreshingly free from the standard, restaurant chain look. Everything about the menu is traditional. One can start with Spanakopita, puff pastry jammed with spinach and feta cheese, as an appetizer. Then advance to the Lamb Loin Chops, or the Chicken Kebob. Top the meal off with Galactobovriko (baked farina custard with vanilla and cognac) for dessert. Vegetarian entrees are also available. A separate lunch menu is served during weekdays.
Great Northern Tavern
This casual place is a brewery, a pub, and a fine restaurant all rolled into one. Outside seating, available when weather permits, makes this a prime spot for people watching. Entrée selections are wonderfully diverse, ranging from braised lamb shanks and Alaskan crab to phyllo wrapped salmon and buffalo flank steak. A large wine list features over 150 vintages and the beer selection includes hand crafted ales and microbrews.
Fresh Fish Company (The)
Swim into the Fresh Fish Company for Sunday brunch in a giant aquarium. Well, it least it feels like it anyway, with the walls of tropical aquariums surrounding you. Funny, but it has much more charm than eating a nice steak in a stockyard. The Sunday Brunch is a crowd pleaser, with all-you-can-eat crab legs and shrimp. Also surprisingly good are its mesquite-grilled items. The service, however, can feel rushed and indifferent to the point of ruining your evening and prompting vows to never return.
Holiday Inn Downtown
Located near the Denver Pavilions and the 16th Street Mall, this towering Holiday Inn resides in the heart of downtown. Comfortable rooms, some with excellent views of the Rocky Mountains, and reasonable rates make this a popular choice for both business and pleasure. An on-site Pizza Hut adds to its heavy convenience factor; room deliveries take only minutes. Its Well #6 offers a generous selection of microbrews.
Merritt House
Located in Uptown, this regal Victorian mansion, built in 1889, was once the home of a prominent Colorado senator. Coupling old-world charm with modern amenities, the Merritt House features a beautiful oak staircase and 81 brass chandeliers. Antiques and heirlooms decorate the rooms. The creaky floors still retain the original oak hardwood and display an assortment of oriental furnishings, along with other arty treasures. All rooms are dressed in period wallpaper and feature private baths. Fresh flowers and colossal homemade cookies await new arrivals in each room.
Fairfield Inn By Marriott-DIA
This quaint chain hotel is a good choice for businessmen, especially if you will be conducting work in or near the Gateway Business Center. Close and easy access to I-70 is a huge convenience factor, especially when getting to and from the airport. Downtown, however, is still 20 minutes away. The rooms are simple and comfortable. Work desks are available in each room. For a more relaxing stay upgrade to a Jacuzzi suite. A number of good restaurants are nearby.
