During your Miami vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Rubell Family Art Collection
This impressive collection, owned by the Miami hotelier family, the Rubells, is housed in a two-story 40,000-square-foot former Drug Enforcement Agency warehouse in a sketchy area north of downtown Miami. The building looks like a fortress, which is fitting: Inside is a priceless collection of more than a thousand works of contemporary art, by the likes of Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Julian Schnabel, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Paul McCarthy, Charles Ray, and Cindy Sherman. But be forewarned: Some of the art is extremely graphic and may be off-putting to some. The gallery changes exhibitions twice yearly and there is a seasonal program of lectures, artists' talks, and performances by prominent artists.

Miami Design Preservation League
On Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings, the Design Preservation League sponsors walking tours that offer a fascinating inside look at the city's historic Art Deco District. Tour-goers meet for a 1 1/2-hour walk through some of America's most exuberantly "architectured" buildings. The league led the fight to designate this area a National Historic District and is proud to share the splendid locale with visitors.

Eco-Adventure Tours
For the eco-conscious traveler, the Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation Department offers guided nature, adventure, and historic tours involving biking, canoeing, snorkeling, hiking, and bird-watching all over the city. Contact them for more information.

Whitelaw Hotel
With a slogan that reads "clean sheets, hot water, and stiff drinks," the Whitelaw Hotel stands apart from the other boutique hotels with a fierce sense of humor, but never compromises on its fabulous amenities. Only half a block from Ocean Drive, this hotel, like its clientele, is full of distinct personalities, pairing such disparate elements as luxurious Belgian sheets with shag carpeting to create a completely innovative setting. All-white rooms manage to be homey and plush and not at all antiseptic. Bathrooms are large and well stocked with just about everything you may have forgotten at home. Complimentary cocktails in the lobby every night from 7 to 8pm contribute to a very social atmosphere.

Chesterfield Hotel
The Chesterfield Hotel is an oft-overlooked kitschy place, located in the heart of South Beach's Deco District, just a skip away from all the restaurants on Ocean Drive or the nightclubs on Washington Avenue. Its Zimbabwe-meets-baroque lobby is a far cry from its original 1930s Art Deco beginnings, but it remains an attractive place for funk-loving hipsters. A recent renovation to the 50 rooms added a luxe touch, with Frette linens and robes; down feather pillows; Judith Jackson spa amenities; and wood, chrome, and glass accents. Bathrooms are industrial, with free-floating showers with rainmaker showerheads, concrete sinks on aluminum stands, and mirrored walls. A new full-service spa features yoga and Pilates. The hotel's Safari Bar/Café is now a full-service restaurant and caters to both a European and an alternative crowd and turns into a spot for a quaint Euro continental breakfast in the morning. There's also a happy hour each evening from 7 to 8pm, with free cocktails. The hotel's proximity to area clubs and modeling agencies, and its ability to create its own eclectic nightlife, make the Chesterfield an award-worthy locale for people-watching.

Hotel St. Augustine
Proving that good things do, indeed, come in small packages is this diminutive, South of Fifth boutique hotel that's part spa, part hotel, and part haven for hipsters seeking refuge from the more mainstream boutique hotel cum hangouts. The lobby is minute, with an equally miniature bar, but at least there is a bar, and the rooms are smallish, but designed like cosmopolitan lofts, with maple wood beds and banquettes and outstanding, spacious bathrooms with glass-enclosed spa cabinets with steam baths and European engineered multi-jet spray showers. Seriously, if you're into bathrooms, this is Nirvana. Dimmable lighting in the bathroom and a spa-bar that offers aromatherapy oils, cooling eye masks, invigorating shower gels, body buffers, and protective sun products make it hard to leave the room. If we had to vote for best hotel bathroom in town, the St. Augustine would win, hands down.
