During your Boston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

New England Aquarium
This complex is home to more than 15,000 fish and aquatic mammals, and at busy times, it seems to contain at least that many people -- in July and August, try to make this your first stop of the morning, especially on weekends. You'll want to spend at least half a day here, and huge afternoon crowds can make getting around painfully slow. Also consider investing in a Boston CityPass; it allows you to skip the ticket line, which can be uncomfortably long, and may represent a savings on the steep admission charge. The Simons IMAX Theatre, which has its own building, hours, and admission fees, is worth planning ahead for too. Its 85-foot-by-65-foot screen shows 3-D films with digital sound that concentrate on the natural world. It's a dizzying experience. The focal point of the main building is the four-story, 200,000-gallon Giant Ocean Tank. A four-story spiral ramp encircles the tank, which contains a replica of a Caribbean coral reef and an assortment of sea creatures that seem to coexist amazingly well. Part of the reason for the peace might be that scuba divers feed the sharks twice a day. Other exhibits show off freshwater and tropical specimens, a wide variety of jellyfish, denizens of the Amazon, and the ecology of Boston Harbor. The floating marine mammal pavilion, Discovery, is home to performing sea lions. At the Edge of the Sea exhibit, visitors can touch the sea stars, sea urchins, and horseshoe crabs in the tide pool. The Aquarium Medical Center is especially involving -- it's a working veterinary hospital.Naturalist-led harbor tours that teach "Science at Sea" run daily in the spring, summer, and fall. Discounts are available when you combine a visit to the aquarium with an IMAX film, harbor tour, or whale watch.

Larz Anderson Auto Museum
The Larz Anderson Auto Museum occupies an 1888 carriage house modeled after a French château. Beginning in 1899, Larz and Isabel Anderson acquired the cars that form the core of the collection, now the country's oldest private assemblage of antique autos. The cars boast what was then the latest equipment, from a two-cylinder engine (in a 1901 Winton race car) to a full lavatory (in a 1906 CGV). Along with the vehicles, auto-related memorabilia from the collection and from other sources are on display. The museum (formerly the Museum of Transportation) has a good gift shop and frequently schedules special events such as concerts, lectures, and family programs. On most warm-weather Sundays, outdoor lawn events include displays of vehicles such as Corvettes, Cadillacs, Triumphs, European motorcycles, or Italian imports. Call to find out what's being featured during your visit.

Gibson House Museum
In the Back Bay, the Gibson House is an 1859 brownstone that embodies the word "Victorian." You'll see decorations of all kinds, including family photos and portraits, petrified-wood hat racks, a sequined pink-velvet pagoda for the cat, a Victrola, and an original icebox. Check ahead for the schedule of lectures and other special events.

Comfort Inn & Suites Logan Airport
Although it loses points for the misleading name -- the airport is about 3 1/2 miles south of the airport -- the well-equipped Comfort Inn still ranks high. The eight-story hotel, which opened in 2001, sits on a hill set back from the street near a busy traffic circle. It offers a good range of amenities for business and leisure travelers, including free high-speed Internet access and local phone calls, continental breakfast, and an indoor pool. Suites are oversize rooms that contain sofa beds, and king suites have refrigerators as well. The staff offers very attentive service. The somewhat inconvenient location translates to reasonable rates, and the North Shore is easily accessible if you plan to take a day trip. Revere Beach is about 2 minutes away by car.Facilities: Restaurant (Italian/American); lounge; indoor pool; exercise room; shuttle to subway and airport; business center; room service (3-11pm); coin-op laundry; laundry service; same-day dry cleaning. Rooms for travelers with disabilities are available.

The MidTown Hotel
Even without free parking and an outdoor pool, this centrally located two-story hotel would be a good deal for families, budget-conscious businesspeople, and tour groups. The boxy white building is on a busy street within walking distance of Symphony Hall and the Museum of Fine Arts. The well-maintained rooms are large, bright, and attractively outfitted in no-frills contemporary style, although bathrooms are on the small side. Some units have connecting doors that allow families to spread out. The best rooms are at the back of the building, away from Huntington Avenue. Many rooms have two-line phones and high-speed Internet access; photocopying and fax services are available at the front desk.

Boston Marriott Copley Place
Although this 38-story tower feels generic, it offers something for everyone -- complete business facilities, a good-size pool, and easy access to Boston's shopping wonderland. The guest rooms, which were refurbished in 2002, have Queen Anne-style mahogany furniture and are large enough to hold a desk, a table, and either two armchairs or an armchair and an ottoman. As with the Back Bay's other high-rise lodgings, ask for the highest possible floor and you'll enjoy excellent views. This is New England's biggest convention hotel (the Sheraton Boston is larger but attracts more vacationers), so if you're not part of a group, you might feel out of place. However, if you're planning at the last minute, a hotel this large offers pretty good odds of finding a room.Facilities: Restaurant (American); heated indoor pool; well-equipped health club; Jacuzzi; sauna; game room; concierge; tour desk; car-rental desk; airport shuttle; full-service business center; 24-hr. room service; massage; laundry service; same-day dry cleaning; concierge-level rooms. Rooms for travelers with disabilities are available.
