During your Miami vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Sea Grass Adventures
Even better than the Seaquarium is Sea Grass Adventures, in which a naturalist from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center will introduce ($10 per person) kids and adults to an amazing variety of creatures that live in the sea grass beds of the Bear Cut Nature Preserve near Crandon Beach on Key Biscayne. Not just a walking tour, you will be able to wade in the water with your guide and catch an assortment of sea life in nets provided by the guides. At the end of the program, participants gather on the beach while the guide explains what everyone's just caught, passing the creatures around in miniature viewing tanks. Call for available dates, times, and reservations.

Venetian Pool
Miami's most beautiful and unusual swimming pool, dating from 1924, is hidden behind pastel stucco walls and is honored with a listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Underground artesian wells feed the free-form lagoon, which is shaded by three-story Spanish porticos and features both fountains and waterfalls. It can be cold in the winter months. During summer, the pool's 800,000 gallons of water are drained and refilled nightly thanks to an underground aquifer, ensuring a cool, clean swim. Visitors are free to swim and sunbathe here, just as Esther Williams and Johnny Weissmuller did decades ago. For a modest fee, you or your children can learn to swim during special summer programs.

Holocaust Memorial
This heart-wrenching memorial is hard to miss and would be a shame to overlook. The powerful centerpiece, Kenneth Triester's Sculpture of Love & Anguish, depicts victims of the concentration camps crawling up a giant, yearning hand, stretching up to the sky, marked with an Auschwitz number tattoo. Along the reflecting pool is the story of the Holocaust, told in cut marble slabs. Inside the center of the memorial is a tableau that is one of the most solemn and moving tributes to the millions of Jews who lost their lives in the Holocaust I've seen. You can walk through an open hallway lined with photographs and the names of concentration camps and their victims. From the street, you'll see the outstretched arm, but do stop and tour the sculpture at ground level.

Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel Dezerland Beach and Spa
Designed by car enthusiast Michael Dezer, the Dezerland is where Happy Days meets Miami Beach, with its visible homage to hot rods and antique cars. Visitors, many of them German tourists, are welcomed by a 1959 Cadillac stationed by the front door, one of a dozen mint-condition classics around the grounds and lobby. This kitschy beachfront hotel recently underwent a $2 million renovation of its guest rooms, lobby, and public areas. Most recently, the hotel added the Nirvana Spa, but the best part about this place is the cheesy restaurant in which you dine in classic cars. The rooms are still somewhat lackluster, despite the fact that the renovation added new drapes, bedspreads, furniture, and wall coverings. Though named for various fabulous cars, these, alas, are the Pintos of hotel rooms -- nothing more than a typical motel room. The lovely pool, however, has its requisite Cadillac -- a mosaic pink one, located at the bottom. For '50s kitsch and car fanatics, this is a fun place to stay; otherwise, you may think you were taken for a ride.

Clevelander
A South Beach institution favored by the beer-swilling set, the Clevelander is best known for its neon- and glass-blocked poolside and bar used in countless photo shoots and Budweiser commercials. As far as its reputation as a hotel, well, it's conveniently located on Ocean Drive and it's dirt cheap considering its location. Unfortunately, the dirt doesn't stop there. It seems that the hotel is more concerned with polishing its poolside glass than its rooms. And the noise level can be deafening. Party animals don't mind at all. But if your idea of a party doesn't involve drinking challenges and wet-T-shirt contests, visit the Clevelander for a cocktail and stay elsewhere.

Brigham Gardens
In a prime location, this funky place, consisting of two buildings (Art Deco and Mediterranean) is a homey and affordable oasis run by a mother-daughter team that will make sure you feel like a member of the family. Because most rooms have full kitchens -- you can also barbecue in the garden -- you'll find many people staying for longer than a weekend. Room 12, in particular, is extremely charming and quiet, with cathedral ceilings, Art Deco decor, and views of the garden. When you enter the tropically landscaped garden, you'll hear macaws and parrots and see cats and lizards running through the bougainvillea. The tiny but lush grounds are framed by quaint Mediterranean buildings, which are pleasant, though in need of some improvements. A rooftop sun deck, with a view of the ocean, is the hotel's newest attraction, though the rooms are constantly being spruced up with funky artwork, furniture, and a colorful array of fresh paint.
