The New England Holocaust Memorial
Erected in 1995, these six glass towers spring up in the midst of attractions that celebrate freedom, reminding visitors of the consequences of a world without it. The pattern on the glass, which at first appears merely decorative, is actually 6 million random numbers, one for each Jew who died during the Holocaust. As you pass through, pause to read the inscriptions.To continue on the Freedom Trail: The trail now passes through a lot of post-Big Dig construction and emerges in the North End. Follow Cross Street to Hanover Street, turn left, and follow Hanover to Richmond Street. Turn right, go 1 block, and turn left.

Boston Public Library
The central branch of the city's library system is an architectural and intellectual monument. The original 1895 building, a National Historic Landmark designed by Charles F. McKim, is an Italian Renaissance-style masterpiece that fairly drips with art. The lobby doors are the work of Daniel Chester French (who also designed the Abraham Lincoln statue in the memorial in Washington, the Minute Man statue in Concord, and the John Harvard statue in Cambridge). The murals are by John Singer Sargent and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, among others. Visit the lovely courtyard or peek at it from a window on the stairs. The adjoining addition, of the same height and material (pink granite), was designed by Philip Johnson and opened in 1972. The lobby holds changing exhibits. Novel serves lunch and afternoon tea Monday through Friday, and Sebastian's Map Room Café is open for snacks 9am to 5pm Monday through Saturday.Free Art & Architecture Tours (www.bpl.org/guides/tours.htm) begin Monday at 2:30pm, Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm, Friday and Saturday at 11am, with an additional tour October through May on Sunday at 2pm. Franklin Park Zoo
The Franklin Park Zoo is becoming more and more enjoyable -- for animals as well as people. From June to September, you can visit the popular, colorful Butterfly Landing enclosure. On the Outback Trail, you can see kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and cockatoos. Serengeti Crossing is home to zebras, ibex, ostriches, and wildebeests. Other installations house cheetahs, lions, snow leopards, and African wild dogs. The African Tropical Forest exhibit is a sprawling complex where you'll see more than 50 species of animals. This is the domain of the Western lowland gorillas, which appear to be roaming free in an approximation of their natural habitat. If you're traveling with animal-mad youngsters, the Children's Zoo is both entertaining and educational.Schedule at least half a day for a visit to the zoo. Franklin Park is 40 minutes from downtown by public transportation, and the walk from the main gate and parking area to the entrance is fairly long, especially for those with little legs.

Radisson Hotel Boston
The neighborhood here isn't the most attractive, due to heavy construction, but this Radisson is a pleasant surprise, popular with business travelers, tour groups, and vacationers alike. The hotel is in the Theater District, convenient to both the Back Bay and downtown. This would be a prime property anywhere: The guest rooms are among the largest in the city, and each has a private balcony (with great views from the higher floors), a sitting area, and a king or two queen beds. The hotel underwent a complete renovation in 1997 and an upgrade in 2003. The best units are the executive-level rooms on the top five floors of the 24-story building. The Stuart Street Playhouse (tel. 617/426-4499), a small theater in the hotel, often stages one-person shows. The hotel also has an indoor golf school and practice facility (tel. 617/457-2699).

Copley Square Hotel
The Copley Square Hotel offers a great location and the pluses and minuses that come with being a relatively small hotel. Built in 1891, the seven-story hotel extends attentive service that's hard to find at the nearby megahotels, but lacks those giants' abundant amenities -- though room rates do include wireless Internet access. If you don't need to engineer a corporate takeover from your room, it's a fine choice, but larger competitors generally offer more features for comparable or slightly higher prices. Each unit has a queen- or king-size bed or two double beds; some rooms are on the small side. Rooms are decorated in an elaborate style that suits the Edwardian-era building, with richly patterned (though not too frilly-floral) fabrics and heavy carved furniture.Facilities: 2 restaurants (American); nightclub; access to exercise room at nearby Lenox Hotel; bike rental; concierge; tour desk; car-rental desk; airport shuttle; business center; room service until 11pm; babysitting; laundry service; same-day dry cleaning. Wyndham Boston
This luxury hotel is contemporary yet conservative -- 21st-century amenities in an Art Deco package. The meticulously designed hotel opened in a complete rehab of the 1928 Batterymarch Building in 1999. Like other downtown lodgings, it draws business travelers during the week and leisure travelers on weekends. The 14-story building is near Faneuil Hall Marketplace and the Waterfront, but not all that close (by downtown standards) to the T. The spacious guest rooms have 9 1/2-foot ceilings and cordless two-line phones. The best units, on the upper floors, afford great views of the harbor and downtown. Soundproofing throughout makes the whole building -- even the halls -- exceptionally quiet. The Wyndham's closest competitor, literally and figuratively, is the Langham, which is less convenient to public transit but has a swimming pool.
