During your Baltimore vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Edgar Allan Poe's Grave
Three modest memorials in this old graveyard recall the poet who wrote "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Raven" (the only poem to inspire an NFL team's name). After his mysterious death at age 40 in 1849, Poe's relatives erected a small gravestone. Before the stone could be installed, a train crashed through the monument yard and destroyed it. In the century since, the site has been adorned with three newer monuments: the main memorial, which features a bas-relief bust of Poe; a small gravestone adorned with a raven at Poe's original burial lot; and a plaque placed by the French, who, thanks to the poet Baudelaire, enjoy some of the best translations of Poe's works. The poet is remembered on his birthday every January 19 when a mysterious "Poe Toaster" leaves half a bottle of cognac and three roses at the grave. On the weekend closest to Poe's birthday, a party is held in his honor. A Halloween tour is also scheduled each year.

Contemporary Museum
The Contemporary Museum offers shows in its Mount Vernon home but sometimes will exhibit art on the sides of buildings or buses or other community setting. Its home is a small storefront near the Walters, with small galleries for shows distinctly contemporary, the art of our time. Photography, video, painting, and performance art have all been the focus of past shows. About four shows per year are scheduled. It's a nice counterpoint to its neighbors, the elegant Walters and the traditional Maryland Historical Society, both a block or so away. Hours are generally Thursday to Saturday, 12-5pm but since they vary with exhibitions, and the museum is closed between exhibitions, calling ahead is a must.

Port Discovery
This is a kid-powered museum where in exhibits covering three floors, kids of all ages (though mostly ages 6-12) can cross the Nile to explore ancient Egypt, climb through a kitchen drain as they solve a mystery in Miss Perception's Mystery House, and climb and play on the three-story-high Kidworks. Walt Disney Company "Imagineers" designed most of the exhibits. Adding to the activity are some high-tech toys in the PD Kid Club, where children use computers to compose music, shoot videos, or produce their own cartoons. Oasis Story Times are offered at 11am Monday through Saturday in summer and Tuesday through Saturday during the school year.As part of a visit -- or on its own -- visitors can take a trip on a tethered helium balloon that rises 450 feet above Baltimore. The HiFlyer (tel. 410/949-2359) can carry 20 passengers (including up to three wheelchairs) for the 20-minute ride. It flies 11:30am to 8pm (until 10pm Fri and Sat) daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with weekend hours September through May whenever the weather's agreeable. You can see to the city's limits.

Inner Harbor Courtyard by Marriott
Overshadowed in size by its big sister, the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront, this Marriott won't be outdone for service or comfortable rooms, which are a good size with desks, comfortable beds, and well-equipped bathrooms. There are eight rooms with Jacuzzis and 10 corner suites. It's serious enough for business travelers but casual enough for families on vacation. Although it's really not in the middle of major attractions, it's on the water taxi routes and located near the newly developing promenade, so getting to the Inner Harbor, Fells Point, or even Fort McHenry is easy.

Baltimore Marriott Inner Harbor
This hotel, with a 10-story crescent-shaped facade, is a couple of blocks from Harborplace and the convention center, and across the street from Camden Yards. Don't confuse it with the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront on Harbor East. A waterfall dominates the busy lobby. Guest rooms are designed in contemporary style and include all the amenities the business traveler expects, including large desks.

Admiral Fell Inn
Updated and expanded over the years, this charming inn sits just across Thames Street from the harbor in the heart of Historic Fells Point. It spans eight buildings, built between 1790 and 1996 and blending Victorian and Federal-style architecture. Originally a boardinghouse for sailors, later a YMCA and then a vinegar bottling plant, the inn now includes antiques in the lobby and library. Guest rooms are individually decorated with Federal period furnishings. Some have canopy beds, some have Jacuzzis, and one suite has a fireplace and Jacuzzi. Two rooms feature balconies. A loft room is quite different from the rest, more rustic, with sloping ceilings that tall guests might not like. But from the three dormer windows, the views are among the best in the inn. The Petticoat Tea Room offers lunch, tea parties anytime, and late afternoon dining.Facilities: Admiral's lounge; tearoom; free use of exercise room at Brookshire Suites; complimentary minivan service to Pier 5 Hotel, Brookshire Suites; weekly evening reception and free weekend activities offered to guests at all 3 hotels; coffee and tea in lobby
