During your Phoenix vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Huhugam Heritage Center
Although this architectural gem adjacent to the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort was not fully open when I visited, it did have a small exhibit on ancient Native American trading trails through the desert. However, the main reason to visit this new facility operated by the Pima and Maricopa tribes is not only to learn about these tribe's culture, but to admire the fascinating architecture and ethnobotanical garden. The center complex is built within a huge berm that was designed to resemble a giant pot buried in the ground.

Wells Fargo History Museum
Yes, this museum is small, and yes, it's run by the Wells Fargo Bank, but the collection of artifacts here goes a long way toward conjuring up the Wild West so familiar from Hollywood movies. Not only is there an original Wells Fargo stagecoach on display, but there are also gold nuggets to ogle, old photos from the real Wild West, and plenty of artifacts and memorabilia from the days of stagecoach travel. There are also original paintings by N. C. Wyeth and bronze sculptures by Frederic Remington and Charles Russell.

McFarland State Historic Park
This historic park consists of the former Pinal County Courthouse, which was built in 1878. Inside the old adobe building, you'll see some rooms that re-create the days when this was the courthouse and others that are furnished as they were when this was a hospital. Exhibits focus on local lynchings and Florence's World War II POW camp.

Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort
This place is not nearly as luxurious or as stylish as the nearby Doubletree or Sunburst, but families will appreciate the resort's kid-friendly character. Long one of the valley's best resort deals, the SunSpree has been upgrading over the past few years -- and its rates seem to be creeping up. Still, compared with other area options, it is relatively economical. Situated on 16 acres amid wide expanses of lawn, the SunSpree is adjacent to the McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, which is a total kid-magnet. Adults can golf at the adjacent Scottsdale Silverado Golf Club, while nongolfers can avail themselves of many other recreational options. Guest rooms have a plush feel that belies the reasonable rates. Ask for a room with a mountain view or a lakeside unit with patio.

The Wigwam Resort
Located 20 minutes west of downtown Phoenix and more than twice as far from Scottsdale, this property opened its doors to the public in 1929 and remains one of the nation's premier golf resorts. It's a classic, with old-school gentility, but when the money all headed to Scottsdale, this place was left feeling like an island amid the affordable housing of the west Valley. As at the Arizona Biltmore and the Camelback Inn, this is an old-money sort of place, and the traditional-style golf courses are the main reason most people choose this resort, which, although elegant, is set amid flat lands that lack the stunning desert scenery of the Scottsdale area. Most of the guest rooms are in Santa Fe-style buildings, surrounded by green lawns and colorful gardens, and all of the spacious units feature contemporary Southwestern furniture. Some units have fireplaces, but the rooms to request are those along the golf course. The Wigwam has a very traditional feel about it. In 2003, the resort underwent an extensive renovation that gave this gracefully aging golf resort a fresh new look.Facilities: 3 restaurants (Southwestern, American); 2 lounges; 2 pools; 3 18-hole golf courses; 9 tennis courts; croquet court; health club; spa services; 2 Jacuzzis; bikes; children's programs; concierge; car-rental desk; 24-hr. room service; massage; babysitting; laundry service; dry cleaning; executive-level rooms.

Gold Canyon Golf Resort
Unless you're an avid golfer, this place is going to seem way too far out of the city. However, if you just want to play golf, then this older resort at the foot of the Superstition Mountains is a great choice. Located way out on the east side of the valley near Apache Junction (at least a 30- to 45-min. drive from the airport), Gold Canyon is a favorite of devoted golfers who come to play some of the most scenic holes in the state. Although nongolfers will appreciate the scenery, the small pool and the lack of an exercise room make it clear that golfers, not swimmers, take the fore here. The spacious guest rooms are housed in blindingly white pueblo-inspired buildings; some have fireplaces, while others have whirlpools. The deluxe golf-course rooms are definitely worth the higher rates. The limited dining options here and in the immediate vicinity are a drawback, but if golf is your game and you've just got to play the Dinosaur Mountain course, then the lack of menu variety shouldn't matter too much.
