Waikiki Aquarium
Do not miss this! Half of Hawaii is its underwater world; plan to spend at least 2 hours discovering it. Behold the chambered nautilus, nature's submarine and inspiration for Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. You may see this tropical spiral-shelled cephalopod mollusk -- the only living one born in captivity -- any day of the week here. Its natural habitat is the deep waters of Micronesia, but aquarium director Bruce Carlson not only succeeded in trapping the pearly shell in 1,500 feet of water (by dangling chunks of raw tuna), but also managed to breed this ancient relative of the octopus. There are also plenty of other fish in this small but first-class aquarium, located on a live coral reef. The Hawaiian reef habitat features sharks, eels, a touch tank, and habitats for the endangered Hawaiian monk seal and green sea turtle. Recently added: a rotating biodiversity exhibit and interactive displays focusing on corals and coral reefs.
Bishop Museum Collection at the Hawaiian Arts & Culture Center at the Hilton Hawaiian Village
Now in Waikiki, this "mini" version of the Bishop Museum is just right for visitors who want to get an insider's view of Hawaiian culture but are pressed for time. Located in the Kalia Tower of the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort and Spa, the Bishop Museum at Kalia features cultural interpreters to walk you through the story of life in Waikiki from ancient times to today. Allow at least an hour (an hour and a half would be better). You can participate in a variety of interactive, hands-on-activities, like lei making, weaving cordage from coconut fibers, pounding kapa into cloth, learning the basic motions of the hula or trying your hand at playing a Hawaiian instrument like the pahu (shark skin drum), ohe hano ihu (nose flute), or uli uli (feathered gourd rattle). As you move from ancient times into the arrival of the missionaries, the royal monarchy, and into Waikiki of the 20th century (with great old surfing movies), you will be amazed at how time flies. Not to be missed!
Lanikai Beach
This is one of the best places on Oahu to greet the sunrise. Watch the sky slowly move from pitch black to wisps of gray to burnt orange as the sun begins to rise over the two tiny offshore islands of Mokulua. Use your five senses for this experience: hear the birds sing, feel the gentle breezes on your face, taste the salt in the air, smell the ocean, and see the kaleidoscope of colors as another day dawns.
Ohana Surf
The Ohana chain makes sure that it has a hotel to suit every budget and every need; this one has recently renovated kitchenettes in every room. The guest rooms, pool deck, and lobby went through extensive renovations in 1997; the rooms were outfitted with new bedspreads, chairs, lampshades, refurbished furniture, new TVs, and new fridges. The Surf is centrally located, across the street from the Kuhio Mall and 2 blocks from the beach; restaurants and nightlife are also within walking distance.
The Breakers
The Breakers is full of old-fashioned Hawaiian aloha -- and it's only steps from the sands of Waikiki. This two-story hotel has a friendly staff and a loyal following. Its six buildings are set around a pool and a tropical garden blooming with brilliant red and yellow hibiscus; wooden jalousies and shoji doors further the tropical ambience. Each of the tastefully decorated, slightly oversized rooms comes with a lanai and a kitchenette. Every Wednesday and Friday, you're invited to a formal Japanese tea ceremony from 10am to noon.
