During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
San Diego Museum of Man
Located under the iconic, rococo, tiled California building and bell tower just inside the park entrance at the Cabrillo Bridge, this museum is devoted to anthropology, with an emphasis on the peoples of North and South America. Favorite exhibits include life-size replicas of a dozen varieties of Homo sapiens, from Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal to Peking Man, and a small room featuring Egyptian mummies and artifacts. Don't overlook the annex across the street, which houses more exhibits, and the lady making fresh tortillas and quesadillas Wednesday through Sunday. The museum's annual Indian Fair, held in June, features American Indians from the Southwest demonstrating tribal dances and selling food, arts, and crafts. Allow at least an hour for your visit.
San Diego Historical Society Museum
A good place to start if you are a newcomer to San Diego, the recently remodeled museum offers permanent and changing exhibits on topics related to the history of the region, from pioneer outposts in the 1800s to the present day. Many of the museum's photographs depict Balboa Park and the growth of the city. Plan to spend about 30 to 45 minutes here. Docent tours are available; call tel. 619/232-6203, ext. 117, for information and reservations. Books about San Diego's history are available in the gift shop, and the research library downstairs is open Thursday through Saturday.
Mount Woodson Golf Club
One of San Diego County's most dramatic golf courses, Mount Woodson is a par-70, 6,180-yard course on 150 beautiful acres. The award-winning 18-hole course, which opened in 1991, meanders up and down hills, across bridges, and around granite boulders. Elevated tees provide striking views of Ramona and Mount Palomar, and on a clear day you can see for almost 100 miles. It's easy to combine a game of golf with a weekend getaway to Julian (see chapter 11). Greens fees for 18 holes (including mandatory cart) are $65 Monday through Thursday, $85 Friday and Sunday, $90 on Saturday. Early-bird, afternoon, and twilight rates are available, and seniors get a discount. Mount Woodson is about 40 minutes north of San Diego.
La Jolla Cove Suites
Tucked in beside prime oceanview condos across from Ellen Browning Scripps Park, this family-run 1950s-era catbird seat actually sits closer to the ocean than its pricey uphill neighbor La Valencia. The to-die-for ocean view is completely unobstructed, and La Jolla Cove -- one of California's prettiest swimming spots -- is steps away from the hotel. The six-story property is peaceful at night, but Village dining and shopping are only a short walk away. You'll pay according to the quality of your view; about 80% of guest quarters gaze upon the ocean. On the plus side, most rooms are wonderfully spacious, each featuring a fully equipped kitchen, plus private balcony or patio. On the minus side, their functional but almost institutional furnishings have drawn complaints from Frommer's readers. An oceanview rooftop deck offers lounge chairs and cafe tables; breakfast is served up here each morning, indoors or outdoors depending on the weather.
Loews Coronado Bay Resort
This luxury resort on the Silver Strand opened in 1991, situated on a secluded 15-acre peninsula, well removed from San Diego and even downtown Coronado, 5 miles away. It's perfect for those who prefer a self-contained resort in a get-away-from-it-all location, and is surprisingly successful in appealing to business travelers, convention groups, vacationing families, and couples. Rooms offer terraces that look onto either the hotel's private 80-slip marina, or the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and San Diego Bay. A private pedestrian underpass leads to nearby Silver Strand Beach. Rooms boast generous, well-appointed marble bathrooms with deep tubs; VCRs are standard in suites, and are available free upon request to any room (video rentals are also available). Another highlight here is the Gondola Company, which offers romantic and fun gondola cruises through the canals of tony Coronado Cays. The seasonal Commodore Kids Club, for children ages 4 to 12, offers supervised half-day, full-day, and evening programs with meals; and pets are welcome, at no additional charge.Facilities: 3 restaurants; bar; 3 outdoor pools; tennis courts; fitness center; spa; Jacuzzi; watersports equipment rental; bike and skate rental; children's programs; concierge; car-rental desk; business center; salon; 24-hr. room service; babysitting; laundry service; dry cleaning.
La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club
You're supposed to pack your best tennis whites for a stint at La Jolla's private "B&T" (as it's locally known), where CEOs and MDs come to relax and recreate. The location is unbeatable -- right on the La Jolla Shores beach -- and the physical property is attractive, in a Spanish hacienda sort of way. However, standard guest rooms are unbelievably plain and outmoded (think late-1970s Holiday-Inn styling); most have full kitchens that are appropriate for families or longer stays. Beachfront rooms are tiny -- the showers are tight enough to give broad-shouldered types claustrophobia -- but they're brighter, and the wide ocean panorama at the foot of your bed is undeniably splendid (if totally un-private). A variety of suites are available. The beach is popular and staff stays busy shooing away non-guests, in between primping the comfy sand chairs and umbrellas, and keeping guests stocked with fluffy towels, beverages, and snacks. Kayaks and watersports equipment can be rented; there's even a sand croquet court. There's no room service, but the hotel's distinctive Marine Room restaurant is one of San Diego's very best, and waves literally smash against its broad windows, inches away from diners. This historic property was founded in the 1920s, when original plans included constructing a yacht harbor (egad!); today it's known primarily for tennis, and for the $40,000 down payment it takes to become a member. You get better room value for your money at the club's sister hotel next door, the Sea Lodge , but you don't stay here for the quality -- B&T guests are chasing exclusive, old-money atmosphere and fawning service.
