Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum/Baltimore Orioles Museum
George Herman "Babe" Ruth was born in this rowhouse. Two rooms are re-created as they would have looked when the Sultan of Swat was a boy. Other exhibits include a wall enumerating his home runs, and memorabilia from his major league career and his days at St. Mary's Industrial School in Baltimore, where he learned to play the game. The Orioles and gone-but-not-forgotten Colts, especially the late Johnny Unitas, have their own exhibits here, as well. The Ruth Museum is opening a new gallery at Oriole Park in Camden Station in May 2005 so they can expand their exhibits on the Orioles. The Babe Ruth Museum's original site, the Babe's home, will focus on Babe Ruth himself.
Star-Spangled Banner Flag House
Everyone remembers Betsy Ross and the first American flag. Baltimoreans recall Mary Pickersgill and the 15-star flag she sewed. It flew over Fort McHenry during the bombardment of the War of 1812 that inspired Francis Scott Key to write "The Star-Spangled Banner." Though the flag is now part of the Smithsonian, its seamstress is remembered in the 1793 house where she lived. Guides offer visitors a glimpse of her life and times. See period furniture and artifacts of the war. A giant glass flag dominates a 2003 addition. Visitors can walk up the stairs behind it and get a sense of how big the star-spangled banner really is. The addition, which is handicapped-accessible, has an orientation theatre, children's hands-on room, and exhibit space. In 2004-05 it is due to offer exhibits on the Chesapeake Bay Campaign of the War of 1812, Mary Pickersgill, and American flags.
Fort McHenry
The flag that flies at Fort McHenry is 30 by 42 feet, big enough for Francis Scott Key to "see by the dawn's early light." The flag's 15 stars and stripes still fly as boldly as they did that terrible night when soldiers here stood once again to reclaim American independence.The star-shaped fort looks much as it did in 1814, the year of the British attack. Its buildings, repaired in the days following that attack, still stand.The Star-Spangled Banner is central to this fort, which is a national park. Visitors are invited to take part in the daily changing of the flag. In fact, because the flag is so big, about 20 people are needed to keep it off the ground and fold it. Stop by at 9:30am or 4:30pm (7:30pm June-Aug) to join in. The large flag flies only during daylight hours, but a smaller flag flies at night. The rangers conclude the flag-raising ceremony with a short historical talk about the fort, the flag, or the national anthem. The Star-Spangled Banner Weekend held in mid-September recalls the British attack on the fort. On selected Sundays, from 6 to 8pm, military bands perform with a color guard, drill teams, and the Fort McHenry Guard dressed in 19th century uniforms, a ceremony which began in 1803. Admission to the ceremony is free. Call or visit the website for a schedule. Exhibits recall Baltimore under siege during the War of 1812, the fort's Civil War service, and its use as an army hospital during World War I. A visit takes about 90 minutes. The fort sits on a point in the harbor, where visitors can see the Inner Harbor, the Patapsco River, and down to the Chesapeake Bay. Visits to the park outside the fort are free, and picnicking is allowed.
Inner Harbor Courtyard by Marriott
Overshadowed in size by its big sister, the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront, this Marriott won't be outdone for service or comfortable rooms, which are a good size with desks, comfortable beds, and well-equipped bathrooms. There are eight rooms with Jacuzzis and 10 corner suites. It's serious enough for business travelers but casual enough for families on vacation. Although it's really not in the middle of major attractions, it's on the water taxi routes and located near the newly developing promenade, so getting to the Inner Harbor, Fells Point, or even Fort McHenry is easy.
Peabody Court Hotel
The name has changed back to an old familiar one, but it's still a Clarion property. This Mount Vernon-area hotel continues to offer the first-class service that has kept it in business since 1930. The boutique-style hotel, which underwent extensive renovation in 2003, has maintained its European-style ambience in its small, luxurious lobby. Guest rooms are polished -- traditional furnishings and gold and maroon upholstery with some of the biggest rooms in the city. The light-bathed corner rooms have upwards of 600 square feet (not including the bathroom). Ask for a room that overlooks Baltimore's most beautiful and historic square. The hotel is close to the Peabody Institute, Walters Art Museum, and Mount Vernon restaurants and shops. The walk to the Inner Harbor takes 20 minutes or so -- and it's all downhill (so of course the walk back is uphill). The restaurant, George's, is casual and not too pricey with several dinner entrees in the $12 range.
Sheraton Inner Harbor
The Sheraton has a perfect location for conventioneers and sports fans. Orioles fans will like both the location and the packages with tickets to Camden Yards. The rooms, though, are fairly dark and not as interesting as many other choices in the area. Its suites are a good idea, set up with Murphy beds so they can be turned into mini-conference rooms. The Oriole Grill has some interesting sports memorabilia, though no view out its picture window. The Morton's of Chicago chain has a restaurant here.
