Irish Shrine at Lemmon Street
The B&O Railroad Museum may be closed for repair, but this new museum takes visitors to the family homes of the men who built the engines down on Pratt Street. Just two brick rowhouses on a narrow street still populated by everyday Baltimoreans, the houses are furnished as they might have been when the families lived there in the 1840s. These streets were home to many Irish immigrants and their families in those days. The tour is self-guided, but the organizations sponsoring this museum also offer an occasional tour of the neighborhood, including a church and neighborhood market. Top of the World Observation Level
For a 360-degree view of Baltimore city, head for the 27th floor of the World Trade Center, the world's tallest pentagonal building, next to Harborplace. In addition to the fine view, you can acquire a bit of background about Baltimore from the exhibits, hands-on displays, and multimedia presentations. Renovations have improved viewing conditions and made it more accessible to disabled visitors. The only way to reach a higher altitude is Port Discovery's HiFlyer. This costs less, and the floor doesn't move.
Port Discovery
This is a kid-powered museum where in exhibits covering three floors, kids of all ages (though mostly ages 6-12) can cross the Nile to explore ancient Egypt, climb through a kitchen drain as they solve a mystery in Miss Perception's Mystery House, and climb and play on the three-story-high Kidworks. Walt Disney Company "Imagineers" designed most of the exhibits. Adding to the activity are some high-tech toys in the PD Kid Club, where children use computers to compose music, shoot videos, or produce their own cartoons. Oasis Story Times are offered at 11am Monday through Saturday in summer and Tuesday through Saturday during the school year.As part of a visit -- or on its own -- visitors can take a trip on a tethered helium balloon that rises 450 feet above Baltimore. The HiFlyer (tel. 410/949-2359) can carry 20 passengers (including up to three wheelchairs) for the 20-minute ride. It flies 11:30am to 8pm (until 10pm Fri and Sat) daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with weekend hours September through May whenever the weather's agreeable. You can see to the city's limits.
Pier 5 Hotel
Be prepared for something wild when you walk into the lobby of the Pier 5. It's bright and airy, and it's fun to settle back into those offbeat sofas. The rooms continue the lobby's purple, red, and yellow color scheme, though much quieter and more refined. Standard rooms are quite comfortable and have lots of conveniences for both the business traveler and the tourist. Suites are luxurious with one, two, or even three tiny balconies overlooking the water or the National Aquarium next door. Just about every room has a water view -- and a much closer one than any of the other hotels because the hotel is only two stories high and right on the water. They offer lots of packages with local attractions that both adults and children will enjoy; and a few for romance, too. Three restaurants are on property: The new Peacock Cafe is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; McCormick & Schmick's offers lunch and dinner; EurAsian Harbor is open for dinner.
Brookshire Suites
This building was once a parking garage, but only the tallest guests might notice the slightly lower ceilings. The rooms are comfortable with room to spread out. The suites are even more spacious, although bedroom space has been sacrificed for more room in the sitting area. The Cloud Club has a terrific view and lots of comfortable seating and TVs if you need even more room to stretch out. What makes this an even better deal for touring families is the full, hot breakfast buffet served every morning. The hotel is a block away from the Inner Harbor on one of the city's main arteries. It's easy to find and a good location for stepping out to see the sights.
Admiral Fell Inn
Updated and expanded over the years, this charming inn sits just across Thames Street from the harbor in the heart of Historic Fells Point. It spans eight buildings, built between 1790 and 1996 and blending Victorian and Federal-style architecture. Originally a boardinghouse for sailors, later a YMCA and then a vinegar bottling plant, the inn now includes antiques in the lobby and library. Guest rooms are individually decorated with Federal period furnishings. Some have canopy beds, some have Jacuzzis, and one suite has a fireplace and Jacuzzi. Two rooms feature balconies. A loft room is quite different from the rest, more rustic, with sloping ceilings that tall guests might not like. But from the three dormer windows, the views are among the best in the inn.
