During your Baltimore vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Maryland Science Center
Three floors of exhibits include the popular Outer Space Place, home of the Hubble Space Telescope National Visitor Center and Space Link, which offers a live connection to NASA. Sometimes the exhibits are too crowded or have limited interest, but the IMAX theater and planetarium are always worth a visit. The IMAX theater presents shows as diverse as Beauty and the Beast and Space Station 3D. IMAX is so popular, extra screenings are available Friday and Saturday evenings for $9 per ticket. A new wing opened in May 2004 with DinoQuest, an exhibit devoted to the study of fossils and the lives of dinosaurs, a health and human body exhibit, plus room for traveling exhibits. The stars are on display at the Davis Planetarium or the Crosby Ramsey Memorial Observatory (open Thurs and Sun nights free of charge).

Washington Monument and Museum
This column, 178 feet tall, stands as the country's first major architectural memorial to George Washington. Begun in 1815, it was designed by Robert Mills, who also designed the Washington Monument (begun in 1848) in Washington, D.C. To learn the whole story, step inside this building and have a look at the exhibit "The Making of a Monument." The physically fit can also climb the 228 steps to the top of the tower and see why this spot is often called the best view in Baltimore.

Baltimore Civil War Museum at the President Street Station
Tucked beside the Marriott Inner Harbor is a small brick structure with a curved roof. The first bloodshed of the Civil War occurred here when Union soldiers arrived in April 1861 on their way south and were attacked by a mob of Southern sympathizers as they marched from this railroad station to Camden Station (now near Oriole Park). The little building, one of the country's oldest railroad stations, has been restored and now has exhibits about that awful day and Maryland's railroad history, as well as an exhibit on the Underground Railroad.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Baltimore area, including:

Peabody Court Hotel
The name has changed back to an old familiar one, but it's still a Clarion property. This Mount Vernon-area hotel continues to offer the first-class service that has kept it in business since 1930. The boutique-style hotel, which underwent extensive renovation in 2003, has maintained its European-style ambience in its small, luxurious lobby. Guest rooms are polished -- traditional furnishings and gold and maroon upholstery with some of the biggest rooms in the city. The light-bathed corner rooms have upwards of 600 square feet (not including the bathroom). Ask for a room that overlooks Baltimore's most beautiful and historic square. The hotel is close to the Peabody Institute, Walters Art Museum, and Mount Vernon restaurants and shops. The walk to the Inner Harbor takes 20 minutes or so -- and it's all downhill (so of course the walk back is uphill). The restaurant, George's, is casual and not too pricey with several dinner entrees in the $12 range.

Inn at the Colonnade
If your Baltimore visit will take you to the northern reaches of the city, to Johns Hopkins University (which is right across the street), or the Baltimore Museum of Art, or to visit friends in Homeland or Roland Park, this is a good choice. Sleek and elegant, the inn offers comfortable rooms, furnished in a Biedermeier style and plenty of amenities. The parking is a bit tricky, and you'd do best to pull up and let the valet park your car.

Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel
The Marriott dominates a prime piece of waterfront -- even though it's more than a few steps from the city's best-known attractions and the convention center. Luckily, the water taxi stops nearby. The hotel rises 32 floors in a developing area known as Harbor East. The rooms are pretty standard, with the added pleasures of down duvets and soft, pillow-top mattresses -- and, of course, that skyline view. The best views are from the 30th, 31st, and 32nd floors, and they come with a premium price. These concierge rooms have all the standard amenities plus deluxe continental breakfast and hors d'oeuvres and cocktails in the Concierge Lounge. Corner rooms offer two views of the city and cost extra. For children, the hotel offers cribs and rollaway beds at no charge and a kids' menu in the restaurants.
