During your Boston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Mary Baker Eddy Library/Mapparium
The Mary Baker Eddy Library, a research center with two floors of interactive and multimedia exhibits, opened in 2002. Its mission is to explore ideas of liberty, spirituality, and the like throughout history. A central role is reserved for Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science. The library's most intriguing exhibit is the Mapparium, a unique hollow globe 30 feet across. Both a work of art and an illustration of political history, the globe consists of a bronze framework that connects 608 stained-glass panels. Because sound bounces off the nonporous surfaces, the acoustics are as unusual as the aesthetics. As you cross the glass bridge just south of the equator, you'll see the political divisions of the world from 1932 to 1935, when the globe was constructed.

Boston Public Library
The central branch of the city's library system is an architectural and intellectual monument. The original 1895 building, a National Historic Landmark designed by Charles F. McKim, is an Italian Renaissance-style masterpiece that fairly drips with art. The lobby doors are the work of Daniel Chester French (who also designed the Abraham Lincoln statue in the memorial in Washington, the Minute Man statue in Concord, and the John Harvard statue in Cambridge). The murals are by John Singer Sargent and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, among others. Visit the lovely courtyard or peek at it from a window on the stairs. The adjoining addition, of the same height and material (pink granite), was designed by Philip Johnson and opened in 1972. The lobby holds changing exhibits. Novel serves lunch and afternoon tea Monday through Friday, and Sebastian's Map Room Café is open for snacks 9am to 5pm Monday through Saturday.Free Art & Architecture Tours (www.bpl.org/guides/tours.htm) begin Monday at 2:30pm, Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm, Friday and Saturday at 11am, with an additional tour October through May on Sunday at 2pm. Call tel. 617/536-5400, ext. 2216, to arrange group tours.

Franklin Park Zoo
The Franklin Park Zoo is becoming more and more enjoyable -- for animals as well as people. From June to September, you can visit the popular, colorful Butterfly Landing enclosure. On the Outback Trail, you can see kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and cockatoos. Serengeti Crossing is home to zebras, ibex, ostriches, and wildebeests. Other installations house cheetahs, lions, snow leopards, and African wild dogs. The African Tropical Forest exhibit is a sprawling complex where you'll see more than 50 species of animals. This is the domain of the Western lowland gorillas, which appear to be roaming free in an approximation of their natural habitat. If you're traveling with animal-mad youngsters, the Children's Zoo is both entertaining and educational.Schedule at least half a day for a visit to the zoo. Franklin Park is 40 minutes from downtown by public transportation, and the walk from the main gate and parking area to the entrance is fairly long, especially for those with little legs.

Best Western Hotel Tria
This four-story establishment underwent a $3 million renovation in 2003. It offers a sophisticated blend of chain-motel convenience and boutique-hotel features -- such as a "soap menu." Guest rooms are spacious, with sleek but comfy contemporary furnishings, and are at least one floor up from the busy street. Room rates include 30 free minutes of local phone calls. The commercial neighborhood is nothing to write home about, but the pool and free parking and breakfast help make up for the less-than-scenic location. A 2 1/2-mile jogging trail circles Fresh Pond, across the street. There's a restaurant next door and a shopping center with a 10-screen movie theater nearby. Boston is about a 15-minute drive or a 30-minute T ride away; Lexington and Concord are less than a half-hour away by car.

The Charles Hotel
This nine-story brick hotel, located a block away from Harvard Square, has been the place for business and leisure travelers to Cambridge since it opened in 1985. Much of its fame derives from its excellent restaurants, jazz bar, and day spa; the service is equally impeccable. In the recently refurbished guest rooms, the style is contemporary country, with custom adaptations of early American Shaker furniture. The austere design contrasts with the indulgent amenities, which include down quilts and Bose Wave radios; bathrooms contain telephones and TVs. And it wouldn't be Cambridge if your intellectual needs went unfulfilled -- there's a library in the lobby.Facilities: 2 restaurants (Rialto, one of Boston's best, and Henrietta's Table, with a lavish Sun brunch); bar; Regattabar jazz club; free access to adjacent health club with glass-enclosed pool, Jacuzzi, and exercise room; adjacent spa and salon; concierge; car-rental desk; business center; 24-hr. room service; in-room massage; babysitting; laundry service; same-day dry cleaning. Rooms for travelers with disabilities are available.

The Westin Copley Place Boston
Towering 36 stories above Copley Square, the Westin attracts business travelers, convention-goers, sightseers, and dedicated shoppers. Sky bridges link the hotel to Copley Place and the Prudential Center complex, and Copley Square is across the street from the pedestrian entrance. The spacious guest rooms -- all on the eighth floor or higher -- have traditional oak and mahogany furniture and offer Westin's beloved pillow-top mattresses. All rooms underwent refurbishment in 2000 and 2001. But you might not notice the furnishings at first because you'll be captivated by the best views in town. Any qualms that you might have had about choosing a huge chain hotel will fade as you survey downtown Boston, the airport and harbor, and the Charles River and Cambridge.Facilities: 2 restaurants (a branch of New York's famous Palm steakhouse, and Turner Fisheries, a good choice for seafood); bar; indoor pool; newly refurbished health club and spa; concierge; car-rental desk; airport shuttle; well-equipped business center; shopping arcade; 24-hr. room service; in-room massage; laundry service; dry cleaning; executive-level rooms. 48 guest units for travelers with disabilities adjoin standard units.
