During your Miami vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

The Scott Rakow Youth Center
This center is a hidden treasure on Miami Beach. The two-story facility boasts an ice-skating rink, bowling alleys, a basketball court, gymnasium equipment, and full-time supervision for kids in the fourth grade and up. Call for a complete schedule of organized events. The only drag is that it's not open to adults (except on Sun, family day).

Diaspora Vibe Art Gallery
This culturally charged art complex is a funky artist hangout and is the home to some of the greatest artworks of Miami's diverse Caribbean, Latin American, and African-American cultures. The gallery has two seasons of shows, often focusing on emerging artists. During the winter, three artists are selected by the gallery to travel to and exhibit their works in Paris. On the last Friday of every month, from May through October, the gallery holds its fabulous cocktail-infused "Final Fridays." A new artist's work is spotlighted inside, while outside in the courtyard are live music performances and readings of poetry and folk tales. Delicious Caribbean cuisine is also served while the who's who of Miami's cognoscenti gather here to recharge their cultural batteries.

Spanish Monastery Cloisters
Did you know that the alleged oldest building in the Western Hemisphere dates from 1133 and is located in Miami? The Spanish Monastery Cloisters were first erected in Segovia, Spain for St. Bernard de Clairvaux, an influential church figure. Centuries later, newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst purchased and brought them to America in pieces. The carefully numbered stones were quarantined for years until they were finally reassembled on the present site in 1954. It has often been used as a backdrop for weddings, movies, and commercials and is a very popular tourist attraction.

Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club
One of Miami's classiest resorts (along the lines of the Mandarin Oriental), this gorgeous 300-acre compound, has every possible facility for active guests, particularly golfers. You'll pay a lot to stay here -- but it's worth it. The main attractions are two Trent Jones courses, available only to members and guests of the hotel. A new seven-story Jasmine wing looks like a Mediterranean village and is surrounded by tropical gardens that are joined by covered marble walkways to the other wings. Treat yourself to a "Turnberry Retreat" at the Turnberry Spa, which recently underwent a $10 million renovation. The spa comprises three levels of deluxe pampering and includes aerobics and fitness classes, stress reduction, massage therapy, and a juice bar designed for complete rejuvenation. Impeccable service from check-in to checkout consistently brings loyal fans back to this resort for more. Its location in the well-manicured residential and shopping area of North Miami Beach known as Aventura means you'll find excellent shopping and some of the best dining in Miami right in the neighborhood. Unless you're into boating, the higher-priced resort rooms (instead of the yacht club) are where you'll want to stay; you'll be steps from the spa facilities and the renowned Veranda restaurant. The well-proportioned rooms are gorgeously tiled to match the Mediterranean-style architecture. The huge bathrooms even have a color TV mounted within reach of the whirlpool bathtubs and glass-walled showers. The only drawback to this hotel is that you'll need to take a shuttle to the beach. Celeb alert: You never know who may stay here. Paul McCartney and his new wife Heather Mills were here just before they tied the knot and allegedly had a huge enough fight that Mills threw her rock of an engagement ring out the window. A week later, Sir Paul paid for a staffer to personally fly the ring back to his estate in the U.K.Facilities: 6 restaurants; numerous bars and lounges; 2 outdoor pools; 2 golf courses; 2 tennis complexes; state-of-the-art spa; extensive watersports equipment rental; concierge; secretarial services; 24-hr. room service; babysitting.

La Flora Hotel
It's hard to keep up with the number of Art Deco, streamlined hotels turned boutique hotels these days, but attention should be paid to La Flora, one of the quieter members of the club. A minimalist 28-room hotel located 1 block from the ocean, La Flora is a very peaceful alternative to the sceney boutique hotels that surround it. Rooms are extremely comfortable and stylish, with damask linens, soothing beige tones, and fabulous black-out curtains that come in handy when you've come in at the crack of dawn. As with many hotels on Collins Avenue, there's no pool, but La Flora's lobby bar, with frequent happy hours, is sporadically swimming with interesting people.

Mayfair House Hotel
This gaudy, Gaudí-esque hotel, located within the deserted streets of Mayfair Mall (an outdoor shopping area), certainly makes you feel removed from the mayhem in the surrounding streets of the Grove, but to me, it's somewhat desolate. Each guest unit has been individually designed and was renovated in 1998. No two rooms are alike, though each room has its own Roman tub or whirlpool and private terrace. Some suites are downright opulent and include a private outdoor Japanese-style hot tub. The top-floor terraces offer good views, and all are hidden from the street by leaves and latticework. Since the lobby is in a shopping mall, recreation is confined to the roof, where you'll find a small pool, sauna, and snack bar. NBA players have been known to stay here, as has one of Miami's more public residents, O. J. Simpson. If you're looking for complete seclusion, the Mayfair is fine, but, for the money, the airier Wyndham Grand Bay or Mutiny Hotels are better choices.
