During your Baltimore vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

National Aquarium in Baltimore
Visitors can walk into a room surrounded by patrolling sharks, wander among the coral reefs, follow the yearly migration of fish, and visit a rainforest on the roof at one of best aquariums in the country. In addition to the watery denizens, exhibits include a puffin display; Maryland: Mountains to the Sea; and a new Amazon River Forest filled with plants and animals as well as fish. The sharks and the dolphin presentation are the main attractions. On a cold day, it's a joy to skip right to the top of the aquarium and bask in the Amazon heat that envelops the brightly colored birds, the shy iguana, and the sloth. (For the best views, come straight here when the aquarium opens, as that's when the animals are most active.) Though you walk in front of most of the exhibits, you actually walk inside the doughnut-shaped Coral Reef and the Open Ocean (shark) tanks, getting up close with these exotic creatures. At feeding time in the coral reef, the divers always draw a crowd. The Marine Mammal Pavilion is connected by covered bridge to the main hall. It's where you'll find the dolphins. Don't miss the presentations; reserve a seat when you pay your admission at no additional fee.Insider tip: The aquarium draws huge crowds in summer. Beat the crush by ordering timed tickets in advance or order tickets from the aquarium website. Nonpeak times are weekday mornings, Friday evenings, and after 3pm. A new Australian exhibit is under construction and will open in spring 2005.

Maryland Science Center
Three floors of exhibits include the popular Outer Space Place, home of the Hubble Space Telescope National Visitor Center and Space Link, which offers a live connection to NASA. Sometimes the exhibits are too crowded or have limited interest, but the IMAX theater and planetarium are always worth a visit. The IMAX theater presents shows as diverse as Beauty and the Beast and Space Station 3D. IMAX is so popular, extra screenings are available Friday and Saturday evenings for $9 per ticket. A new wing opened in May 2004 with DinoQuest, an exhibit devoted to the study of fossils and the lives of dinosaurs, a health and human body exhibit, plus room for traveling exhibits. The stars are on display at the Davis Planetarium or the Crosby Ramsey Memorial Observatory (open Thurs and Sun nights free of charge).

Port Discovery
This is a kid-powered museum where in exhibits covering three floors, kids of all ages (though mostly ages 6-12) can cross the Nile to explore ancient Egypt, climb through a kitchen drain as they solve a mystery in Miss Perception's Mystery House, and climb and play on the three-story-high Kidworks. Walt Disney Company "Imagineers" designed most of the exhibits. Adding to the activity are some high-tech toys in the PD Kid Club, where children use computers to compose music, shoot videos, or produce their own cartoons. Oasis Story Times are offered at 11am Monday through Saturday in summer and Tuesday through Saturday during the school year.As part of a visit -- or on its own -- visitors can take a trip on a tethered helium balloon that rises 450 feet above Baltimore. The HiFlyer (tel. 410/949-2359) can carry 20 passengers (including up to three wheelchairs) for the 20-minute ride. It flies 11:30am to 8pm (until 10pm Fri and Sat) daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with weekend hours September through May whenever the weather's agreeable. You can see to the city's limits.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Baltimore area, including:

Harbor Court Hotel
The Harbor Court strives for quiet dignity, refinement, and graciousness. It's a treat to walk in the door, and when you spend the night, prepare to be pampered. Rooms are exquisitely furnished, from suites with hand-painted decorations, marble bathrooms, kitchenettes, and canopy beds to large standard rooms outfitted in fine furnishings. The hotel overlooks the harbor, but only a few rooms have a clear harbor view. Dining options include two first-rate restaurants: Hampton's and Brighton's, which serves a rich afternoon tea; and the Explorer's Lounge, which offers music every night and is popular with locals as well as hotel guests.

Renaissance Harborplace Hotel
The Renaissance is in the middle of everything. Business travelers find it convenient to local firms, the convention center, and restaurants. Tourists like its location across the street from Harborplace and the Inner Harbor. It's part of The Gallery at Harborplace, five floors of shops topped by an office tower. Rooms are the biggest in Baltimore with comfortable furniture and wide windows that really open overlooking the Inner Harbor. Renovated in 2003, the lighter colors make the huge rooms seem even more spacious. Its views are good, especially on the upper floors. If you want a comfy chair, ask for a king unit. There's a concierge level with a lounge where breakfast and afternoon drinks and hors d'oeuvres are served. Need extra luxury? Special suites connect bedrooms to parlors with living room and dining room, kitchenette, and some even have Murphy beds for extra guests. The fitness center is to be moved to a harborview site -- good news for treadmillers.

Wyndham Baltimore
You could get lost in here, but the staff is aware of how big their hotel is and are quick to point a lost guest in the right direction. Just remember which tower you're staying in. The Wyndham is Maryland's largest hotel, with two towers housing 707 rooms. It's a popular place for conventions. Rooms are set up with the business traveler in mind, including secretarial services available in the business center. But tourists can count on comfortable rooms about 5 blocks to the Inner Harbor. The First Mariner Arena and Mechanic Theater are next door.
