City Hall
Built in 1928, the 27-story triangular Los Angeles City Hall was the tallest building in the city for more than 30 years. The structure's distinctive ziggurat roof was featured in the film War of the Worlds, but it is probably best known as the headquarters of the Daily Planet in the Superman TV series. When it was built, City Hall was the sole exception to an ordinance outlawing buildings taller than 150 feet. On a clear day (yeah, right), the top-floor observation deck offers views to Mount Wilson, 15 miles away.

Capitol Records Building
Opened in 1956, this 13-story tower, just north of the legendary intersection of Hollywood and Vine, is one of the city's most recognizable buildings. The world's first circular office building is often, but incorrectly, said to have been made to resemble a stack of 45s under a turntable stylus (it kinda does, though). Nat "King" Cole, songwriter Johnny Mercer, and other 1950s Capitol artists populate a giant exterior mural. Look down and you'll see the sidewalk stars of Capitol's recording artists (including John Lennon). In the lobby, numerous gold albums are on display.The light on the rooftop spire of the Capitol Records building flashes "H-O-L-L-Y-W-O-O-D" in Morse code. Really, it does.

Griffith Park
Mining tycoon Col. Griffith J. Griffith donated these 4,107 acres to the city in 1896 as a Christmas gift. Today Griffith Park is the largest urban park in America. There's a lot to do here, including 53 miles of hiking trails (the prettiest is the Fern Dell trail near the Western Ave. entrance, a shady hideaway cooled by waterfalls and ferns), horseback riding, golfing, swimming, biking, and picnicking (see "Golf, Hiking & Other Fun in the Warm California Sun," later in this chapter). For a general overview of the park, drive the mountainous loop road that winds from the top of Western Avenue, past Griffith Observatory, and down to Vermont Avenue. For a more extensive foray, turn north at the loop road's midsection, onto Mt. Hollywood Drive. To reach the golf courses, the Museum of the American West, or Los Angeles Zoo, take Los Feliz Boulevard to Riverside Drive, which runs along the park's western edge.Near the zoo, in a particularly dusty corner of the park, you can find the Travel Town Transportation Museum, 5200 Zoo Dr. (tel. 323/662-5874), a little-known outdoor museum with a small collection of vintage locomotives and old airplanes. Kids love the miniature train ride that circles the perimeter of the museum. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10am to 4pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm; admission is free. Built in 1927, the 12-story hotel is a Historic Cultural Monument. Plenty of polished brass complements the neutral sand-colored decor; both conspire to accentuate the impressive architectural features that remained intact during a major renovation in 1989. Checkers is a European-styled hotel, without a lot of flashy amenities and possessing an understated luxury. Guest rooms are equipped with 27-inch flat-screen TVs, granite-top desks, and spacious marble bathrooms with plush terry-cloth bathrobes. Public areas include a wood-paneled library, a rooftop lap pool, and serene corridors punctuated with Asian antiques. Checkers Restaurant is one of Downtown's best-kept secrets, serving complex dishes ranging from New American to French in a peaceful setting; the weekend brunch is worth planning for in advance. The warm, intimate bar at Checkers is also a very popular hangout for the Downtown après-work crowd. Best Western Ocean View Hotel
This ocean-facing chain hotel, located just across the street from Santa Monica Beach and amusement pier, offers welcome price relief in high-rent Santa Monica. The clean and modern property offers terrific bargains to those willing to forego an ocean view from their room. But even the deluxe-view rooms, which all have private balconies looking out across Ocean Avenue to beach and pier, are a steal for this area. Rooms are comfortably outfitted in chain-hotel style; all have coffeemakers, while oceanview rooms have fridges, too (microwaves are available upon request). Don't pay extra for a balcony, though, unless you know it has an ocean view, or you may end up overlooking the subterranean parking lot. The staff is courteous and professional, and many fine restaurants are within walking distance. Heck, they even offer complimentary continental breakfast.
