During your Denver vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum
More than 40 planes and spacecraft occupy cavernous Hangar No. 1, which became a museum when Lowry Air Force Base closed in 1995; now it's a burgeoning residential area about 6 miles southeast of downtown. On display are antique biplanes, a search-and-rescue helicopter, an F-14 Tomcat, a massive B-1A bomber -- one of only two in existence -- and most of the F-100 fighter series. You can also see a World War II uniform collection, a Norden bombsight, U3A Blue Canoe, and the Freedom space module, plus seasonal exhibits. On each month's second Saturday the museum hosts "Demo Cockpit Day," when visitors get to climb into the planes' cockpits. Sci-fi fans take note: A full-size X-Wing prop used in the filming of Star Wars is on permanent display. The store is filled with aviation- and space-oriented souvenirs. Allow 1 1/2 hours.

City Park
Denver's largest urban park covers 330 acres (96 sq. blocks) on the east side of uptown. Established in 1881, it retains Victorian touches. The park encompasses two lakes (with boat rentals and fishing), athletic fields, jogging and walking trails, a free children's water feature, playgrounds, tennis courts, picnic areas, and an 18-hole municipal golf course. In summer, there are concerts. The park is also the site of the Denver Zoo and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science (including its IMAX Theater), discussed elsewhere in this chapter.

Denver Mountain Parks
Formally established in August 1913, the city's Mountain Parks system immediately began acquiring land in the mountains near Denver to be set aside for recreational use. Today it includes more than 14,000 acres, with 31 developed mountain parks and 16 unnamed wilderness areas that are wonderful places for hiking, picnicking, bird-watching, golfing, or lazing in the grass and sun.The first and largest, Genesee Park, is 20 miles west of Denver off I-70 exit 254; its 2,341 acres contain the Chief Hosa Lodge and Campground (the only overnight camping available in the system), picnic areas with fireplaces, a softball field, a scenic overlook, and an elk-and-buffalo enclosure.Among the system's other parks is Echo Lake, about 45 minutes from downtown Denver on Colo. 103. At 10,600 feet elevation on Mount Evans, the park has good fishing, hiking, and picnicking, plus a restaurant and curio shop. (Note: A fee program is being tested here; the charge is $10 per carload.) Other parks include 1,000-acre Daniels Park (23 miles south of Denver; take I-25 to Castle Pines Parkway, then go west to the park), which offers picnic areas, a bison enclosure, and a scenic overlook; and Dedisse Park (2 miles west of Evergreen on Colo. 74), which provides picnic facilities, a golf course, restaurant, clubhouse, and opportunities for ice-skating, fishing, and volleyball.

Renaissance Denver
About midway between downtown and Denver International Airport, the Renaissance is our pick for a comfortable but still somewhat elegant hotel that offers all the amenities we might want. Particularly impressive is the architecture -- a white double pyramid 12 stories high. The 10-story atrium lobby has tropical palms and fig trees growing beneath the central skylight, fountains, lots of marble and brass, and plants draping down from the balconies. Each spacious room -- among the largest you'll find in Denver -- is decorated in a contemporary style and includes an easy chair and ottoman, two phones, and a private balcony. The hotel is adjacent to now-closed Stapleton Airport, and most of its patrons are businesspeople. It's also a good choice for budget-minded tourists looking for a convenient stopover between the mountains and DIA, with lower rates than comparable downtown properties, and a location closer to the airport.

Chatfield State Park
On the south side of Denver, 1 mile south of the intersection of Colo. 121 (Wadsworth) and Colo. 470, Chatfield has a 1,550-acre reservoir with ample opportunities for boating, water-skiing, fishing, and swimming, plus around 20 miles of trails for horseback riding, mountain biking, and hiking. Facilities include hot showers, picnic areas, a dump station, boat ramps and rentals, and electric hookups. The campground is open from May to October.

The Westin Tabor Center
The focal point of the 2-square-block Tabor Center shopping-and-office complex, the 19-story Westin bridges the gap between the central business district and lower downtown, and is conveniently located near Coors Field. Its contemporary design incorporates architectural elements of nearby Victorian-era structures. The elegant second-floor lobby features three-dimensional murals and modern fountains. The workout room is downtown Denver's best. The spacious guest rooms, three-quarters of which contain king-size beds, were renovated with a contemporary flair in 2003-04. Every room has Westin's trademark pillow-topped mattresses and deluxe showerheads. The Executive Club on the top three floors provides upgraded features and amenities, including an in-room wet bar, continental breakfast, afternoon cocktails, and a resident concierge.Facilities: 2 restaurants (American, steakhouse); lounge; heated indoor/outdoor pool; health club (w/weight room and racquetball courts); Jacuzzi; sauna; concierge; business center; shopping arcade; limited room service; massage; laundry service; dry cleaning; executive level.
