During your Nashville vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Willie Nelson & Friends Showcase Museum/Gift Emporium
Less a museum than a souvenir shop with a few exhibits in a back room, this tourist site features some of Willie's guitars, gold and platinum records, and even his pool table. The museum is inside the Music Valley Gift Emporium. Allow 20-30 minutes if you're shopping for souvenirs.
Belle Meade Plantation
Belle Meade was built in 1853 after this plantation had become famous as a stud farm that produced some of the best racehorses in the South. Today, the Greek Revival mansion is the centerpiece of the affluent Belle Meade region of Nashville and is surrounded by 30 acres of manicured lawns and shade trees. A long driveway leads uphill to the mansion, which is fronted by six columns and a wide veranda. Inside, the restored building has been furnished with 19th-century antiques that hint at the elegance and wealth that the Southern gentility enjoyed in the late 1800s.Tours led by costumed guides follow a theme that changes every 3 months (i.e. holidays, aspects of plantation life, etc.). These themed tours provide fascinating glimpses into the lives of the people who once lived at Belle Meade. Also on the grounds are a large carriage house and stable that were built in 1890 and that now house a large collection of antique carriages. During your visit, you can also have a look inside a log cabin, a smokehouse, and a creamery that are here on the grounds. Belle Meade's parklike grounds make it a popular site for festivals throughout the year.In addition, Martha's at the Plantation (tel. 615/353-2828), a simple yet stylish restaurant above the gift shop, is drawing raves for chef Martha Stamp's American/Southern dishes such as chicken salad, crawfish, quiches, and caramel cakes. A best-selling cookbook author, Stamp has also been featured in Southern Living and Victorian magazines, as well as on the TV show Martha Stewart Living. Sunday brunch is among the locals' favorites at Martha's at the Plantation, open daily 11am to 2pm. Allow a full morning or afternoon to soak up everything here.
James K. Polk House
This modest home was where James K. Polk, the 11th president of the United States, grew up and where he lived when he began his legal and political career. Though Polk may not be as familiar a name as those of some other early presidents, he did achieve two very important goals while in office: Polk negotiated the purchase of California and settled the long-standing dispute between the United States and England over where to draw the border of the Oregon Territory. The house is filled with antiques that belonged to Polk's parents when they lived here and to Polk and his family during their time in the White House. In a separate building there is an exhibit of political and Mexican War memorabilia.
Loew's Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel
This posh high-rise across the street from Vanderbilt University maintains an air of quiet sophistication, which makes it the most luxurious West End hotel. European tapestries and original works of art adorn the travertine-floored lobby. In addition, the hotel houses the upscale Kraus commercial art gallery. The lower guest rooms, with angled walls that slope inward, are among the hotel's most charming, with a wall of curtains lending a romantic coziness. Service is gracious and attentive. Concierge-level rooms are more spacious and upscale and include complimentary breakfast and evening hors d'oeuvres in an elegant lounge with a view of the city. One level below the lobby, you'll find a Ruth's Chris Steakhouse.
The Hermitage Hotel
This historic downtown hotel, built in 1910 in the classic beaux-arts style, is Nashville's grand hotel. Reopened in 2003 after an $18 million restoration, this is the city's top choice if you crave both space and elegance. The lobby, with its marble columns, gilded plasterwork, and stained-glass ceiling, is the most magnificent in the city. Afternoon tea is served here Thursdays through Saturdays. Guest rooms (all of which are suites) are recently upgraded, spacious, and comfortable, with down-filled duvets and pillows on the beds. All rooms feature large windows and marble-floored bathrooms with double vanities. Before you settle in for a long soak in the tub, ask the staff to draw you a warm bath with a sprinkling of rose petals. North-side rooms have good views of the capitol.Down in the lower level you'll find the Capitol Grille, which, with its vaulted ceiling, has the feel of a wine cellar. Also in the basement is a dark and woody lounge with an ornate plasterwork ceiling. Every floor has handicapped-accessible rooms.
Hilton Suites Nashville Downtown
One of Nashville's newest hotels boasts a bustling downtown location, palm-lined atrium lobby, and one of the city's hottest watering holes-Eddie George's Sports Grill, named for the Tennessee Titans' star running back. Booking a room here is a good bet if you plan to spend time at the Coliseum or the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, both of which are within short walking distance of the Hilton. Each suite comes equipped with a pullout sofa couch, two TVs, in-room movies and video games, microwave, refrigerator, coffeemaker and more, making the Hilton a comfy but sophisticated place to hang your hat while in Music City.
