Governor's Mansion
Silver magnate Thomas Kearns built this palatial home in 1898, sparing no expense to make it as lavish as possible. African and Italian marble and exotic woods from around the world were used extensively throughout. Kearns' widow deeded it to the state in 1937, and the 36-room mansion is now the governor's residence. It suffered a devastating fire just before Christmas 1993, but has been fully restored to its 1902 appearance (1902 was the year that Kearns and his family first moved in). The best time to see the mansion is in December, when it's elaborately decorated for Christmas. Allow about half an hour.

Gardner Village
This quaint village is a cluster of restored historic homes and buildings surrounding Gardner Mill, a flour mill built by Scottish immigrant Archibald Gardner in 1877. Brass plaques tell the stories of each of the historic structures. The mill, which is on the National Historic Register, now houses a large store specializing in country furniture and gift items, as well as Archibald's Restaurant. Close to two dozen shops in the other historic buildings, connected by red brick paths, sell a wide range of items, including art, crafts, clothing, candy, quilts, dolls, and home furnishings. There's also a spa, a bakery, and a picturesque duck pond. Plan to spend at least an hour here.

Brigham Young Monument
This marker, near the southeast corner of Temple Square, was placed here to honor Young, the other pioneers who accompanied him here in 1847, and the American Indians and fur trappers who preceded them. Allow 15 minutes.

Saltair Bed & Breakfast
Established in 1980, the Saltair is one of the oldest continuously operating B&Bs in Utah, although the building itself is quite a bit older. Now listed on the National Historic Register, it was constructed in 1903 and housed Salt Lake City's Italian Consulate in the early part of the century. Named for a resort built on the Great Salt Lake in the late 1800s, this inn boasts an enormous collection of Saltair memorabilia, from humorous postcards to knickknacks of all kinds. Units vary in size and specifics, from standard rooms to suites to cottages to a fully equipped bungalow. The cottages and bungalow are especially good for those traveling with children. All units are comfortably furnished with an eclectic variety of antiques, and goose-down comforters grace each bed. Inn at Temple Square
A beautiful hotel brimming with 18th-century European elegance and style, The Inn at Temple Square is an exquisite little gem, offering wonderful service, food, and facilities. Built in 1930, the hotel has been restored and then some -- it offers an experience reminiscent of the grand hotels of old, but with a warm, homey touch. The lobby is like a living room, with fine artwork, couches, and chairs you can sink into. On the mezzanine level, you'll find a baby grand piano, a library with inviting reading areas, and a fireplace. Spacious guest rooms have a comfortable, old-world feel.The Inn is centrally located, just across from Temple Square and within easy walking distance of downtown theaters, restaurants, spectator sports, historic sites, and shopping. International Ute Hostel
Located in a safe residential neighborhood, this hostel offers bunk beds in three dorm rooms, plus two private rooms (each with one queen bed). It's just a short walk to the Traxx light-rail line, which provides easy access to downtown attractions. As you would expect, everyone shares bathrooms and showers. Facilities include a fully equipped kitchen with free beverages, and lounges with cable TV. Particularly popular with international students, the hostel is unusually clean and provides free linen, tea and coffee, and safe deposit boxes.
