Museum of Modern Art
After two years of being temporarily ensconced in Queens, MoMA returned to its original Manhattan location in late 2004. And though the address is the same, the space is now, with over 630,000 square-feet, almost twice the size of the original. The renovation, designed by Yoshio Taniguchi, highlights space and light, with open rooms, high ceilings, and gardens?a beautiful work of architecture and a perfect complement to the art that resides within. This is where you?ll find van Gogh?s Starry Night, Cezanne?s Bather, Picasso?s Les Demoiselles d?Avignon, and the amazing sculpture by Rodin, Monument to Balzac. Whenever I visit, I like to browse the fun ?Architecture and Design? department, with examples of design for modern appliances, furniture, and even sports cars. MoMA also features edgy new exhibits and a celebrated film series that attracts serious cinephiles. But the heart of the museum, as it was before the renovation, remains the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden, which has been enlarged; the museum?s new design affords additional views of this lovely space from other parts of the museum. My only complaint with the new MoMA is its very high ($20) admission charge for adults.

Skyscraper Museum
Wowed by the sheer verticality in this town? Awed by the architectural marvel that is the high-rise? You're not alone. If you'd like to learn more about the technology, culture, and sheer muscle behind it all, seek out this formerly itinerant museum, which will move into its first permanent home in 2004 in the 38-story Skidmore, Owings & Merrill tower that also houses the Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park. The new space comprises two galleries, one housing a permanent exhibition dedication to the evolution of Manhattan's commercial skyline, the other for changing shows.

Louis Armstrong House Museum
What is it about celebrities' homes that we find so fascinating? Is it that we get to see how they lived away from the glare of the cameras; how they functioned on a daily basis just like the rest of us? Armstrong was an international celebrity and could have lived anywhere, yet this unassuming, bi-level house in the working-class neighborhood of Corona, Queens, was the great Satchmo's home from 1943 until his death in 1971. It was bought and designed by his fourth wife, Lucille, who lived in it until her death in 1983. No one has lived in the house since and in 2003, the house, a National Historic Landmark and a New York City landmark, opened its doors to the public as a museum. The 40-minute tour takes you through the small, impeccably preserved home and explains the significance of each room to both Louis and Lucille. My favorite is Armstrong's den, where he kept his reel-to-reel tape recordings, cataloging everything he taped -- music, conversations, and compositions, some of which are displayed on his desk. The house also includes a small exhibit with some of his memorabilia, including two of his trumpets, and a guest shop, where many of his CDs are for sale along with other Satchmo-centric items. If you have any interest in jazz and in Armstrong, this is a must see.

The Phillips Club
Located in the heart of Lincoln Center, the Phillips Club was one of the first extended-stay hotels to open in Manhattan, but your stay doesn't have to be long to appreciate the hotel's many amenities. The lobby is minimalist and maybe not as warm and welcoming as many hotels, but the staff is friendly and helpful. The marble bathrooms are large, though not extravagant. There are washers and dryers on each floor, and though there is no restaurant on the premises, Balducci's, the gourmet grocery store located next door to the hotel, will deliver a full continental breakfast, sandwiches, or anything else they make to your room. Guests have access to the Reebok Sports Club/NY, one of the most exclusive and largest fitness clubs in Manhattan, which features 140,000 square feet of exercise space, including two basketball courts, an Olympic-size pool, and a 40-foot climbing wall. The apartment-like amenities make the hotel a good, though expensive, option for families or for anyone seeking a bit more control over their environment while visiting the city.

Friendly innkeepers Annette and Barry Fisherman have launched one of Manhattan's few -- and one of its finest -- full-service B&Bs. The Inn on 23rd is a marvelous find for those who love individualized accommodations and a personal touch.All guest rooms are spacious. Each has a king or queen bed outfitted with a supremely comfy pillow-top mattress and top-quality linens, a satellite TV, a new private bathroom with thick Turkish towels, and a roomy closet. Rooms have themes based on how they are designed; there's the coolly sophisticated Rosewood Room, with '60s built-ins; the Bamboo Room, peacefully quiet and elegantly Asian; and Ken's Cabin, a large, lodgelike room with cushy, well-worn leather furnishings and wonderful Americana relics. The suite has a skylight with ultra-romantic Empire State Building views.An elevator means you don't have to cart your luggage up multiple flights of stairs, and a number of rooms have pullout sofas or Murphy beds to accommodate more than two travelers. The New School now holds culinary classes daily in Annette's kitchen, so even if you don't want to join in you may still benefit from the gourmet leftovers. The central Chelsea location makes it a convenient starting point to any Manhattan destination.

Casablanca Hotel

Rick's Cafe is one of the city's finest hotel guest lounges, boasting a serve-yourself cappuccino machine, a fireplace, a big-screen TV, and PCs with T1 connectivity. A tiled second-floor courtyard is also ideal for summer lounging, and the rooftop deck is a perfect vantage for watching the New Year's ball drop. The staff is attentive, and the ambitious manager is constantly at work improving the property. Book well ahead, as an increasing number of happy repeat guests and corporate clients fill this place up fast.
