New Museum of Contemporary Art
This contemporary arts museum has moved closer to the mainstream in recent years, but it's only a safety margin in from the edge as far as most of us are concerned. Expect adventurous and well-curated exhibitions. The 2005 exhibition calendar had not been announced at press time, but previous schedules have included Portrait of the Lost Boys, New Zealander Jacqueline Fraser's moving narrative made of sumptuous fabric and fragile wire sculptures that examines the high incidence of suicide among teenage boys in New Zealand, and John Waters: Change of Life, photographs by the filmmaker who brought us Pink Flamingos and Hairspray. The Zenith Media Lounge, a digital and media arts technology space housing rotating installations, is free to the public. In 2006, the museum will move to a new 60,000-square-foot, $35-million home on the Bowery at Prince Street.
Trinity Church
Serving God and Mammon, this Wall Street house of worship -- with neo-Gothic flying buttresses, beautiful stained-glass windows, and vaulted ceilings -- was designed by Richard Upjohn and consecrated in 1846. At that time, its 280-foot spire dominated the skyline. Its main doors, embellished with biblical scenes, were inspired in part by Ghiberti's famed doors on Florence's Baptistery. The historic Episcopal church stood strong while office towers crumbled around it on September 11, 2001; however, an electronic organ has temporarily replaced the historic pipe organ, which was severely damaged by dust and debris. The gates to the historic church currently serve as an impromptu memorial to the victims of 9/11, with countless tokens of remembrance left by both locals and visitors alike.The church runs a brief tour daily at 2pm (a 2nd Sun tour follows the 11:15am Eucharist); groups of five or more should call tel. 212/602-0872 to reserve. There's a small museum at the end of the left aisle displaying documents (including the 1697 church charter from King William III), photographs, replicas of the Hamilton-Burr duel pistols, and other items. Surrounding the church is a churchyard whose monuments read like an American history book: a tribute to martyrs of the American Revolution, Alexander Hamilton, Robert Fulton, and many more. Lined with benches, this makes a wonderful picnic spot on warm days.Also part of Trinity Church is St. Paul's Chapel, at Broadway and Fulton Street, New York's only surviving pre-Revolutionary church, and a transition shelter for homeless men until it was transformed into a relief center after September 11; it returned to its former duties in mid-2002. Built by Thomas McBean, with a templelike portico and fluted Ionic columns supporting a massive pediment, the chapel resembles London's St. Martin-in-the-Fields. In the small graveyard, 18th- and early-19th-century notables rest in peace and modern businesspeople sit for lunch.Trinity holds its renowned Noonday Concert series of chamber music and orchestral concerts Mondays and Thursdays at 1pm; call tel. 212/602-0747 or visit the website for the full schedule, and to see if concert programming has resumed at St. Paul's.

Spirit Cruises' modern ships are floating cabarets that combine sightseeing in New York Harbor with freshly prepared meals, musical revues, and dancing to live bands. The atmosphere is festive, fun, and relaxed. The buffet meals are nothing special, but they're fine.
W Union Square
Uberarchitect David Rockwell transformed the magnificent 1911 Guardian Life building overlooking leafy Union Square into a new gem, successfully fusing original beaux arts detailing with bold, clean-lined modernism and a relaxing, grown-up air. Rooms boast distinctive touches such as luminous mother-of-pearl counters in the bathrooms. Star chef Todd English's Mediterranean-accented Olives gets raves, and nightclub impresario Rande Gerber's dark and sultry Underbar is just downstairs.
Hotel Newton
Located on the burgeoning northern extreme of the Upper West Side, the Newton, unlike many of its peers, doesn't scream "budget" at every turn. As you enter the pretty lobby, you're greeted by a uniformed staff that's attentive and professional. The rooms are generally large, with good, firm beds, a work desk, and a sizable new bathroom, plus roomy closets in most (a few of the cheapest have wall racks only). Some are big enough to accommodate families, with two doubles or two queen beds. The suites feature two queen beds in the bedroom, a sofa in the sitting room, plus niceties such as microwave, minifridge, and iron, making them well worth the few extra dollars. The bigger rooms and suites have been upgraded with cherrywood furnishings, but even the older laminated furniture is much nicer than I usually see in this price range. The AAA-approved hotel is impeccably kept. The 96th Street express subway stop is just a block away, providing convenient access to the rest of the city, and the Key West Diner next door is a favorite for huge, cheap breakfasts.
Hotel Giraffe
Located in the increasingly fashionable Madison Park area, this hotel is a real charmer with a very, calm, intimate feel to it. Guest rooms are stylish, evoking an urban European character, with high ceilings, velveteen upholstered chairs, and original black-and-white photographs from the '20s and '30s. All the rooms are good size with high ceilings, while deluxe rooms and suites feature French doors that lead to small balconies with large windows and remote-controlled blackout shades. Bathrooms are spacious with plenty of marble counter space and glass-paneled doors, and all rooms have very generous marble-topped desks with free high-speed Internet. But what really separates this hotel from so many others are its services: A continental breakfast is included in the rate and served in the hotel's elegant lobby, where coffee, cookies, and tea are available all afternoon, and wine, cheese, and piano music are offered each evening. There is also a lovely rooftop garden -- the perfect place for a glass of wine or morning coffee during warm weather.
