During your Boston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Old Granary Burying Ground
This cemetery, established in 1660, was once part of Boston Common. You'll see the graves of patriots Samuel Adams, Paul Revere, John Hancock, and James Otis; merchant Peter Faneuil (spelled "Funal"); and Benjamin Franklin's parents. Also buried here are the victims of the Boston Massacre (discussed below) and the wife of Isaac Vergoose, who is believed to be "Mother Goose" of nursery rhyme fame. Note that gravestone rubbing, however tempting, is illegal in Boston's historic cemeteries. To continue on the Freedom Trail: Turn left as you leave the cemetery and continue 1 1/2 blocks on Tremont Street.

Bunker Hill Monument
This 221-foot granite obelisk honors the memory of the colonists who died in the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775. The rebels lost the battle, but nearly half the British troops were killed or wounded, a loss that contributed to the redcoats' decision to abandon Boston 9 months later. The Marquis de Lafayette, the celebrated hero of the American and French revolutions, helped lay the monument's cornerstone in 1825. He is buried in Paris under soil taken from the hill. A punishing flight of 294 stairs leads to the top of the obelisk. There's no elevator, and although the views of the harbor and the northern portion of the Big Dig are good, the windows are quite small. The ranger-staffed lodge at the base of the monument holds dioramas and exhibits.Note: Planned renovations may affect open hours during your visit. The walk and the view from the hill are still worth the time, but if you want to climb the monument and see the exhibits, call ahead to make sure that's possible.

Commonwealth Museum/Massachusetts Archives
The nearby Kennedy Library explores the history of one of Boston's most famous families; here, you might find your own clan's history. The Commonwealth Museum has videos, slide shows, and interactive exhibits on the state's people, places, and politics. Topics covered recently in the regularly changing exhibits include the archaeology of the Big Dig, the Civil War, and state history. In the same building, the state archives contain passenger lists for ships that arrived in Boston from 1848 to 1891; state census schedules that date to 1790; and documents, maps, and military and court records starting with the Massachusetts Bay Company (1628-29). Knowledgeable staff members are on hand to answer researchers' questions in person, by mail, or by phone. This is a worthwhile detour on the way to or from the Kennedy Library.

Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites
A limited-services lodging on a busy street, the Holiday Inn Express is a great deal. It's comfortable and convenient -- just a 5-minute walk from the Green Line -- which makes it perfect for businesspeople on tight budgets as well as vacationers. Each decent-size room has a fridge and a microwave, making this a good choice for families who plan to eat some meals in. The eight-story building sits slightly back from the street, but you'll still want to be as high up as possible to get away from traffic noise. If you're willing to do without a restaurant, business center, or exercise facility, you'll probably find that the reasonable rates, which include parking -- a big plus in Cambridge -- more than make up for the lack of extras.

Hotel Marlowe
Hotel Marlowe is the first Northeast venture by detail-oriented Kimpton Boutique Hotels, a company that's best known for the beloved Hotel Monaco brand. This hotel opened in 2003 in a new eight-story building adjacent to the CambridgeSide Galleria mall, around the corner from the Museum of Science. It's chic yet comfortable, with abundant amenities for both businesspeople and leisure travelers. The elegantly decorated guest rooms are of a good size, with enough room to hold a work desk and an armchair. Rooms have down comforters and three phones (one in the bathroom), plus funky-boutique-hotel touches like leopard-print carpeting and a faux-fur throw across the foot of the bed. You will have views of the river (across the busy boulevard), a small canal, or the landscaped courtyard/driveway that shields the lobby from the street. The Marlowe's closest competition is the Royal Sonesta Hotel , across the street, which is more expensive but has a pool and health club.

The Colonnade Hotel
The seasonal "rooftop resort" and swimming pool are probably this hotel's best-known features, with excellent service a close runner-up. Adjacent to Copley Place and the Prudential Center, the independently owned Colonnade is a slice of Europe in the all-American shopping paradise of the Back Bay. It caters to working travelers, to visitors engaging in retail therapy, and to children of all ages with the "VIKids" program and a rubber ducky in every bathroom. You'll likely hear at least a dozen languages spoken by the guests and the friendly, professional staff of this 11-story concrete-and-glass hotel. The elegance of the quiet, high-ceilinged public spaces here carries over to the large guest rooms, which were spruced up in 2000. All have contemporary oak or mahogany furnishings and marble bathrooms (each with its own phone). Units on the Huntington Avenue side overlook the bustling Prudential Center complex, while rooms at the back survey the pleasant patchwork of the South End. Suites have dining rooms and sitting areas, and the "author's suite" contains autographed copies of the work of celebrated (or at least published) literary guests.Facilities: Restaurant; bar; heated outdoor rooftop pool; state-of-the-art fitness center; concierge; 24-hr. business center; 24-hr. room service; in-room massage; babysitting; laundry service; same-day dry cleaning. Rooms for travelers with disabilities are available.
