During your Salt Lake City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Utah's Hogle Zoo
This small, modern zoo near the entrance to Emigration Canyon is home to 1,100 animals representing over 250 species. You'll find a solarium with exotic plants and birds, tropical gardens, rare Grevy's zebras, and a giraffe house with a balcony so you can look eye-to-eye with the tall-necked creatures. Among the newer residents of the zoo are a pair of Amur tiger cubs and a baby Colobus monkey, all born at the zoo in 2003. In summer, rides on a small replica of an 1869 steam train are offered for the bargain-basement price of $1. As with any zoo, it's best to visit in one of the cooler seasons, or at least the coolest part of the day, when more animals are out and about. Allow 1 to 2 hours. The Discovery Theatre presents three children's programs daily.
Classic Cars International Antique Auto Museum of Utah
More than 200 antique and classic cars are packed into several showrooms here, and many are for sale. Although the collection is constantly changing, among the vehicles we admired were a 1903 Steven Duryea, a beautiful bright yellow 1926 Stutz Bearcat, an elegant 1929 dual cowl Duesenberg, a 1936 Packard V-12 two-door convertible, several 1959 big-finned Cadillac convertibles, and a 1925 Packard Phaeton convertible owned by gangster Al Capone. There are usually a number of muscle cars from the 1960s as well. All cars in the collection, whether original or restored, are fully operational. You'll also see antique slot machines, gas pumps, and a jukebox. Allow at least 45 minutes to an hour.
University of Utah
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints opened the University of Deseret in 1850, just 2 1/2 years after they arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. It closed 2 years later, due to lack of funds and the greater need for primary education, but reopened in 1867 as a business academy. The name changed in 1892, and the growing school moved to its present location in 1900. The university now sprawls over 1,500 acres on the east side of the city. The university's Red Butte Garden and Arboretum (801/581-4747; www.redbuttegarden.org) features 50 acres of display gardens and another 100 acres in their natural state, with 4 miles of nature trails. Located in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, this is a terrific spot to take a break from hectic city sightseeing. The gardens are open May through September, Monday through Saturday from 9am to 8pm, Sunday from 9am to 5pm; October through April, Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Admission is $5 for adults, and $3 for children 4 to 17 and seniors 60 and over. From downtown, drive east on 400 South, past the university entrance, continuing until 400 South becomes Foothill Drive; turn east on Wakara Way and continue to the entry drive. Allow 2 hours. The University is also home to the Utah Museum of Fine Arts and the Utah Museum of Natural History.
Peery Hotel
Among our top choices for those who appreciate the ambiance of a historic hotel, the Peery is one of the few truly historic hotels in Salt Lake City. Completed in 1910, it has been fully renovated and restored to its former understated European elegance, offering comfortable, tastefully decorated accommodations. The lobby is delightful, with old-style pigeonholes for letters and a grand staircase to the upper floors. Each unique, handsomely appointed room contains period furnishings, pedestal sinks with antique brass fixtures, a queen or king bed, and desk. Some units have refrigerators, and several suites have whirlpool tubs. The entire hotel is nonsmoking.
The Armstrong Mansion Bed & Breakfast
This stately red-brick mansion exudes an atmosphere of splendor and luxury. The B&B is an opulent Queen Anne-style Victorian home decorated with antiques and reproductions. It features such architectural delights as stained-glass windows and an intricately carved oak staircase. The four-story mansion, built in 1893 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was renovated in 1994 and now has an elevator. The stencils on the walls are reproductions of the mansion's original decorative patterns, discovered during renovation. A variety of rooms are available; most have queen-size beds though a few have kings. Most units have whirlpool tubs. The full all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet -- served between 7:30 and 10am -- consists of a hot dish, breads, and a variety of fruits.
Little America Hotel
Little America is among Salt Lake City's finest hotels, offering a wide variety of rooms, all individually decorated. Choices range from standard courtside units to extra-large deluxe tower suites in the 17-story high-rise. All are gracefully yet comfortably appointed in French provincial style, and come complete with 31-inch color TVs and pay-per-view movies. The locally popular coffee shop opens at 5am; there's also a steakhouse and lounge. The hotel offers valet parking, and has a second-floor sun deck with an indoor/outdoor pool plus a separate, beautifully landscaped outdoor pool. There are banquet and conference facilities here.
