During your Salt Lake City vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
Governor's Mansion
Silver magnate Thomas Kearns built this palatial home in 1898, sparing no expense to make it as lavish as possible. African and Italian marble and exotic woods from around the world were used extensively throughout. Kearns' widow deeded it to the state in 1937, and the 36-room mansion is now the governor's residence. It suffered a devastating fire just before Christmas 1993, but has been fully restored to its 1902 appearance (1902 was the year that Kearns and his family first moved in). The best time to see the mansion is in December, when it's elaborately decorated for Christmas. Allow about half an hour.
Utah Museum of Fine Arts
This is among the very best art museums in the state, boasting a permanent collection of more than 17,000 objects. Displays might include Greek and Egyptian antiquities, Italian Renaissance works, art by European masters, early American art, 20th century lithographic prints and photography, and art objects from Southeast Asia, China, Japan, and African and pre-Columbian cultures. Changing exhibits highlight shows from other institutions and private collections. The 74,000-square-foot museum has over 20 galleries, a bookstore, a cafe, a community education center, and a sculpture garden. Allow 2 to 4 hours.
Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Mine
The world's largest open-pit copper mine, at 2 1/2 miles wide and three-quarters of a mile deep, is quite a sight to see, and almost as fascinating are the huge -- and we do mean huge -- trucks that transport the ore. The visitor center, 2,000 feet above the floor of the open-pit mine, offers a spectacular view, and you might even see an explosion, as rock is blasted away to expose more copper ore. In addition to the observation area, the visitor center has interactive exhibits -- including 3-D microscopes for examining minerals -- and offers a 14-minute video presentation that relates the mine's history and geology and describes its operations. Proceeds from admission fees are donated to local charities. Allow about 1 hour.
Peery Hotel
Among our top choices for those who appreciate the ambiance of a historic hotel, the Peery is one of the few truly historic hotels in Salt Lake City. Completed in 1910, it has been fully renovated and restored to its former understated European elegance, offering comfortable, tastefully decorated accommodations. The lobby is delightful, with old-style pigeonholes for letters and a grand staircase to the upper floors. Each unique, handsomely appointed room contains period furnishings, pedestal sinks with antique brass fixtures, a queen or king bed, and desk. Some units have refrigerators, and several suites have whirlpool tubs. The entire hotel is nonsmoking.
Anton Boxrud Bed & Breakfast Inn
This beautiful three-story red-brick structure, built in 1901, is listed on the Salt Lake City Historical Register as "Victorian Eclectic." A boardinghouse from 1938 to 1968, it's now a lovely, comfortable bed-and-breakfast inn. Each room is individually decorated with a mix of antiques and reproductions; all have queen beds with down comforters. Pocket doors and stained-glass windows grace the sitting room, where guests gather to enjoy evening refreshments. An outdoor Jacuzzi is available year-round, and a private business office for guest use is furnished with a fax, copier, phone, and modem. The homemade full breakfast includes a hot dish, and a continental breakfast is available for early risers. Special diets can be accommodated. The entire property is nonsmoking.
International Ute Hostel
Located in a safe residential neighborhood, this hostel offers bunk beds in three dorm rooms, plus two private rooms (each with one queen bed). It's just a short walk to the Traxx light-rail line, which provides easy access to downtown attractions. As you would expect, everyone shares bathrooms and showers. Facilities include a fully equipped kitchen with free beverages, and lounges with cable TV. Particularly popular with international students, the hostel is unusually clean and provides free linen, tea and coffee, and safe deposit boxes. Complimentary pick-up at the airport, train and bus depots, or information center is available, as is free off-street parking. Inexpensive bike, ski, skate, and golf rentals can be arranged. Smoking is not permitted.
