Japanese Garden
Considered the finest example of a Japanese garden in North America, Portland's Japanese Garden is one of the city's most popular attractions. Don't miss it. Not only are there five different styles of Japanese gardens scattered over 5 1/2 acres, but there's also a view of volcanic Mount Hood, which has a strong resemblance to Mount Fuji.While Japanese gardens are traditionally not designed with colorful floral displays in mind, this garden definitely has its seasonal highlights. In early spring there are the cherry trees, in midspring there are the azaleas, in late spring a huge wisteria bursts into bloom, and in early summer, huge Japanese irises color the banks of a pond. Among the gardens, there's a beautiful and very realistic waterfall.This is a very tranquil spot and is even more peaceful on rainy days when the crowds stay away, so don't pass up a visit just because it's raining. Also, on the third Saturday of each of the summer months, there's a demonstration of the Japanese tea ceremony in the garden's tea house. There are also many special events held here throughout the year (ikebana, bonsai, Japanese-inspired art).

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site
It was here in Vancouver, at the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) Fort Vancouver, that much of the Northwest's important early pioneer history unfolded. The HBC, a British company, came to the Northwest in search of furs, and for most of the first half of the 19th century it was the only authority in this remote region. Fur trappers, mountain men, missionaries, explorers, and settlers all made Fort Vancouver their first stop in Oregon country. Today Fort Vancouver houses several reconstructed buildings that are furnished as they might have been in the middle of the 19th century. In summer, there are costumed interpreters on hand giving demonstrations of activities that once took place here at the fort. Outside the fort is a large formal garden.

Oaks Park Amusement Center
What would summer be without the screams of happy thrill-seekers risking their lives on a roller coaster? Pretty boring, right? Just ask the kids. They'll tell you that the real Portland excitement is at Oaks Park. Covering more than 44 acres, this amusement park first opened in 1905 to coincide with the Lewis and Clark Exposition. Beneath the shady oaks for which the park is named, you'll find waterfront picnic sites, miniature golf, music, and plenty of thrilling rides. The largest wood-floored roller-skating rink in the west and an organist still plays the Wurlitzer for the skaters.

The Heathman Hotel
With its understated luxury and superb service, The Heathman, which abuts the Portland Center for the Performing Arts, is one of the finest hotels in the city. Although this is primarily a top-end business hotel, it's also the address of choice for visiting culture hounds, with its proximity to the theater and an outstanding collection of art ranging from 18th-century oil paintings to Andy Warhol prints. Don't look for a bowl-you-over lobby here; although there is plenty of marble and teak, the lobby itself is tiny. However, just off the lobby is the Tea Court, where the original eucalyptus paneling creates a warm, old-world atmosphere.The basic rooms here tend to be quite small, but are nonetheless attractively furnished and set up for business travelers. There are no real views to speak of, but rooms on the west side of the hotel look out to a mural done just for the hotel. Basically what you get here is luxury in a small space. Ask for a corner room, which gets more light and feels more spacious.The Heathman Restaurant and Bar is one of Portland's finest, with a menu that emphasizes creatively prepared fresh local produce, seafood, and game. Afternoon tea is served in the Lobby Lounge, and there's usually live jazz nightly. There are also complimentary wine tastings several nights a week.

Silver Cloud Inn Portland Airport
Conveniently located right outside the airport, this hotel has one of the best backyards of any hotel in the Portland area. A lake, lawns, and trees all add up to a tranquil setting despite the proximity of both the airport and a busy nearby road. Rooms are designed primarily for business travelers, but even if you aren't here on an expense account, the rooms are a good value, especially those with whirlpool tubs (and you even get free local calls). Some suites have gas fireplaces. Best of all, with the exception of two suites, every room has a view of the lake. An indoor pool is another big plus here. To find this hotel, take the complimentary airport shuttle or head straight out of the airport, drive under the I-205 overpass, and watch for the hotel sign ahead on the left.

5th Avenue Suites Hotel
Located a block from Pioneer Courthouse Square and within a few blocks of the best downtown shopping, this unpretentious yet sophisticated hotel is housed in what was originally a department store. Artwork by Northwest artists fills the lobby, and in the afternoon there are complimentary tastings of Oregon and Washington wines.Guest rooms, most of which are suites, are furnished in a turn-of-the-century country style but also have fax machines and two-line speakerphones for 21st-century convenience. Plush chairs and beds with padded headboards and luxurious comforters assure that business travelers (and others) will be comfortable in their home away from office. Bathrooms have lots of counter space.
