During your Miami vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Bay Escape
This 1-hour air-conditioned cruise will take you past Millionaires' Row and the Venetian Islands for just $15. There's also a food stand and cash bar. The tours are bilingual.

Latin American Art Museum
In addition to the permanent collection of contemporary artists from Spain and Latin America, this 3,500-square-foot museum hosts monthly exhibitions of works from Latin America and the Caribbean Basin. Usually, the exhibitions focus on a theme, such as international women or surrealism. It's not a major attraction, but it's worth a stop if you're interested in Latin American art. On the same block, you'll find great design stores and a few other galleries.

Sea Grass Adventures
Even better than the Seaquarium is Sea Grass Adventures, in which a naturalist from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center will introduce ($10 per person) kids and adults to an amazing variety of creatures that live in the sea grass beds of the Bear Cut Nature Preserve near Crandon Beach on Key Biscayne. Not just a walking tour, you will be able to wade in the water with your guide and catch an assortment of sea life in nets provided by the guides. At the end of the program, participants gather on the beach while the guide explains what everyone's just caught, passing the creatures around in miniature viewing tanks. Call for available dates, times, and reservations.

Miccosukee Resort and Convention Center
Located on the edge of the Everglades, about 30 to 40 minutes west of the airport, the Miccosukee Resort is the closest thing South Florida's got to Las Vegas, but accommodations really are just a step above a Holiday Inn. The Miccosukee tribe was originally part of the lower Creek Nation, which lived in areas now known as Alabama and Georgia. After the final Seminole War in 1858, the last of the Miccosukees settled in the Everglades. Following the lead set recently by many other Native American tribes, they built the resort to accumulate gambling revenue. Although many tourists go out to the resort solely to gamble, it also has expansive meeting and banquet facilities, spa services, great children's programs, entertainment, and excursions to the Florida Everglades. Guest rooms are standard, furnished with custom pieces made exclusively for the resort, but if you're here, you're not likely to spend that much time in your room.

Park Washington Hotel
The Park Washington, designed in the 1930s by Henry Hohauser, is a large, refurbished hotel just 2 blocks from the ocean that offers some of the best values in South Beach. Most of the rooms have original furnishings and well-kept interiors, and some have kitchenettes. Bathrooms are small but clean. Guests also enjoy a decent-size outdoor heated pool with a sun deck, bikes for rent, and access to a nearby health club, as well as privacy, lush landscaping, consistent quality, and a value-oriented philosophy. This hotel attracts a large gay clientele.

The Palms South Beach
A $5 million renovation has transformed this formerly shabby, uninspired oceanfront tourist trap into an antebellum tropical oasis in which Art Deco meets Gone with the Wind. Lush tropical landscaping, both indoors and out, is a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle on congested Collins Avenue. In fact, the landscaping renovations of the hotel were so impressive, Fairchild Tropical Garden opened a gift shop at the hotel, The Palm Collection by Fairchild Tropical Garden, which offers an impressive collection of items for the home and garden. Upon arrival, guests receive the hotel's signature welcome drink, O'Mango Infusion, and on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, the hotel offers Yoga Under the Palms, complimentary Yoga sessions taking place in and around the hotel's garden. Rooms have been spruced up beautifully, bordering on boutiquey, with high-tech amenities, and if you're so inclined, you can take advantage of the hotel's Relax and Rejuvinate spa-treatments in the comfort of your own room. A huge outdoor area is landscaped with palms and hibiscus and has a large freshwater pool as its centerpiece. It faces a popular boardwalk for runners and strollers as well as a large beach where watersports equipment is available. To sway you from leaving the premises, the Palms has an excellent beach service, a "PoolCierge," in which umbrellas, towels, lounges, and, of course, that tropical drink with a paper umbrella are just a short order away. Note: This hotel is not in South Beach, as the name would have you believe. However, it is in the heart of Miami Beach and is only a short ride to South Beach. The hotel now offers a "Palms and Parrots Family Package," a 2-night package featuring tickets for the entire family to Parrot Jungle Island in Miami Beach and includes a welcome basket of tropically-themed snacks for the kids.
