Puu Ualakaa State Park
The best sunset view of Honolulu is from a 1,048-foot-high hill named for sweet potatoes. Actually, the poetic Hawaiian name means "rolling sweet potato hill," which is how early planters used gravity to harvest their crop. The panorama is sweeping and majestic. On a clear day -- which is almost always -- you can see from Diamond Head to the Waianae Range, almost the length of Oahu. At night, several scenic overlooks provide romantic spots for young lovers who like to smooch under the stars with the city lights at their feet. It's a top-of-the-world experience -- the view, that is.

Kahuku Golf Course
This nine-hole budget golf course is a bit funky. There are no club rentals, no clubhouse, and no facilities other than a few pull carts that disappear with the first handful of golfers. But a round at this scenic oceanside course amidst the tranquillity of the North Shore is quite an experience nonetheless. Duffers will love the ease of this recreational course, and weight watchers will be happy to walk the gently sloping greens. Don't forget to bring your camera for the views (especially at holes 3, 4, 7, and 8, which are right on the ocean). No reservations are taken; tee times are first-come, first-served -- with plenty of retirees happy to sit and wait, the competition is fierce for early tee times. Bring your own clubs and call ahead to check the weather. The cost for this experience? Ten bucks!

Waikiki Aquarium
Do not miss this! Half of Hawaii is its underwater world; plan to spend at least 2 hours discovering it. Behold the chambered nautilus, nature's submarine and inspiration for Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. You may see this tropical spiral-shelled cephalopod mollusk -- the only living one born in captivity -- any day of the week here. Its natural habitat is the deep waters of Micronesia, but aquarium director Bruce Carlson not only succeeded in trapping the pearly shell in 1,500 feet of water (by dangling chunks of raw tuna), but also managed to breed this ancient relative of the octopus. There are also plenty of other fish in this small but first-class aquarium, located on a live coral reef. The Hawaiian reef habitat features sharks, eels, a touch tank, and habitats for the endangered Hawaiian monk seal and green sea turtle. Recently added: a rotating biodiversity exhibit and interactive displays focusing on corals and coral reefs.

Ke Iki Beach Bungalows
This collection of rustic studio, and one- and two-bedroom duplex cottages has a divine location. It's snuggled on a large lot with its own 200-foot stretch of white-sand beach between two legendary surf spots: Waimea Bay and Banzai Pipeline. The winter waves are rough stuff; we regular folks can only venture in to swim in the flat summer seas. But there's a large lava reef nearby with tide pools to explore (great for kids) and, on the other side, Shark's Cove, a relatively protected snorkeling area. Nearby are tennis courts and a jogging path. Ke Iki is not for everyone, though. The furnishings are modest, though clean and comfortable; kitchens, barbecues, and hammocks provide some of the comforts of home. The one-bedrooms have one or two single beds in the living room, a double in the separate bedroom, and a full kitchen. Note: The units are now under new ownership and have been remodeled with new paint and new furniture from Bali, and the oceanfront units now have TVs and phones. Tip: Stay on the beach side, where the views are well worth the extra bucks.

Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel
After a $30 million renovation on a very old and tired hotel, Aston opened this kitschy 717-room (85% with ocean views) property in late 2002. The location could not be better -- directly across the street from the beach. The rooms couldn't be smaller. The theme is Hawaiian nostalgia with a "contemporary island feel." But what you really have is a former budget hotel that has been repainted (garish colors -- screaming yellow or disgusting red), and a few decorating oddities that do not work. For example, the closets have beaded curtains (instead of doors) of a hula dancer who dances when the wind blows through. Sounds great, but not practical, every time you go into your closet you have to fight with the *#@! beads. We stayed here just a month after the opening and already the beaded curtain was falling apart. In the bathroom, another impractical idea is the arched shower curtain for a rectangle bathtub. Every time you take a shower, the semi-circle shower curtain lets all the water run on the floor. One of the good ideas is the "Breakfast on the Beach" deal where you get a free breakfast, which you can pack up in an insulated carrying bag and walk across the street to eat. This is a full, hot breakfast too, with several food stations offering everything from burritos (veggie, ham or cheese), pastries, fruit, and cereals to Japanese breakfast of miso, rice, and fish. If you can get a hot deal on the Internet ($104 was the going rate when we stayed here), it's worth it. But if you have to pay rack rates, you can do better.

Aston Coconut Plaza
This small hotel is an island of integrity in a sea of tourist schlock. Calling itself a "studio apartment boutique hotel," the Coconut Plaza offers perks that are rare in Waikiki, such as free continental breakfast and the kind of personalized service that only a small hotel can provide. The recently renovated property has a tropical-plantation feel, with big, airy, island-style rooms, terra-cotta tile, and lots of greenery. The bedrooms have been redone in rattan and earth tones; all have private lanais, ceramic-tile bathrooms, and daily maid service. The units with kitchenettes are especially good deals. Most rooms have views of the Ala Wai Canal and the mountains (if you prefer quiet, ask for a city-view room). Ala Wai Golf Course is just across the canal, and the beach is 4 blocks away.
