During your San Diego vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:
San Diego Miniature Railroad & Carousel
Located just east of the zoo entrance, these antiquated enticements never fail to delight the pre-teen set. The open-air railroad takes a 3-minute journey through a grove of eucalyptus trees, while the charming carousel is one of the last in the world to still offer a ring grab (free ride if you seize the brass one). The carousel, built in 1910, is a classic, with hand-carved wood frogs, horses, and pigs.
House of Pacific Relations International Cottages
This cluster of 17 charming one- and two-room cottages disseminates information about the culture, traditions, and history of 28 countries. Light refreshments are served, and outdoor lawn programs are presented by one of the nations every Sunday, 2-3pm, March through October. The adjacent United Nations Building houses an international gift shop where you can buy jewelry, toys and books, and UNICEF greeting cards (tel. 619/233-5044); it's open daily from 10am to 4pm.
SDAI Museum of the Living Artist
Around since 1941, the San Diego Art Institute now has a museum to house exhibits of new artworks by local artists. The 10,000-square-foot municipal gallery rotates juried shows in and out every 4 to 6 weeks, ensuring a variety of mediums and styles. It's a good place to see what the local art community is up to. Plan to spend about half an hour here.
Hotel del Coronado
Opened in 1888 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977, "Hotel Del," as it's affectionately known, is the last of California's grand old seaside hotels. This monument to Victorian grandeur boasts tall cupolas, red turrets, and gingerbread trim, all spread out over 31 acres. Rooms -- almost no two alike -- run the gamut from compact to extravagant, and all are packed with antique charm; most have custom-made furnishings. The least expensive rooms are snug and have views of a roof or parking lot. The best are junior suites with large windows and balconies fronting one of the state's finest white-sand beaches, but note that even here, bathrooms are modest in size. There are nine cottages lining the sand that are more private (Marilyn Monroe stayed in the first one). Almost half the hotel's rooms are in the seven-story contemporary tower and offer more living space, but none of the historical ambience; personally, I can't imagine staying here in anything but the Victorian structure, but you pay a premium for the privilege (especially for an ocean view), and 2-night minimums often apply. In 2001, the hotel completed a painstaking, $55 million, 3-year restoration. Historical accuracy was paramount, resulting in this priceless grande dame being returned to its turn-of-the-20th-century splendor. Much of the renovation was behind-the-scenes: $21 million alone was spent shoring up the structural integrity of the delicate building. Even if you don't stay here, don't miss a stroll through the grand, wood-paneled lobby or along the pristine wide beach. The Prince of Wales is the hotel's fine dining emporium, remodeled from a dark, clubby room to an airy, elegant ocean-facing salon; cocktails and afternoon tea are served in the wood-paneled lobby and adjoining Palm Court, and Sunday brunch in the Crown Room is a San Diego tradition.
Omni San Diego Hotel
San Diego's newest downtown property is noteworthy for the fourth-floor "skybridge" that connects it with Petco Park -- it's the only hotel in the U.S. directly linked to a major-league facility. Twelve rooms even have (limited) views of the field. There's also a signature suite decked out in baseball collector's items (trimmed in the Padres' orange and black color scheme), and the hotel's common areas are decorated with baseball memorabilia, such as Babe Ruth's 1932 contract with the Yankees and Joe DiMaggio's cleats from his 1941 streak. If you want to be in the heart of the baseball action, this is it. The rest of the year, this $124 million, 32-story high-rise competes for the business crowd, luring conventioneers with 20,000 square feet of meeting space and an up-to-the-minute business center. Rooms feature work desks, dual-line telephones, and 330-count Egyptian cotton sheets, while a sixth-floor rooftop terrace has a double-sided fireplace, an outdoor swimming pool, and a Jacuzzi.
Dana Inn and Marina
The Dana completed a $20 million renovation and expansion in 2004 which added 74 contemporary rooms in a three-story arc wrapping around an infinity pool. These rooms are a fair upgrade from the sleepy old Dana, but the old rooms, in two-story buildings, were spruced up at the same time. Some overlook bobbing sailboats in the recreational marina, others face onto the original kidney-shaped pool whose surrounding Tiki torch-lit gardens offer shuffleboard and Ping-Pong. You'll pay a little extra for bay and marina views; if the view doesn't matter, save your money -- every one of the old rooms is the same size, with plain but well-maintained furnishings. The new rooms are bigger and feature water views and reclaimed redwood beam ceilings. Beaches and SeaWorld are a 15-minute walk away (there's also a complimentary shuttle). Meals and room service (including poolside food and cocktail ministrations) are available through the new restaurants, Firefly Bar & Grill and Blue Pearl.
