During your Honolulu vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Honolulu Sailing Co
This company has been in business for 2 decades, offering a variety of sailing activities. Our favorite is the Diamond Head snorkel-picnic sail on the waves. During whale season (roughly Dec-Apr), check out the half- and full-day adventures to see whales, dolphins, flyingfish,

Valley of the Temples
This famous cemetery in a cleft of the pali is stalked by wild peacocks and about 700 curious people a day, who pay to see the 9-foot meditation Buddha, 2 acres of ponds full of more than 10,000 Japanese koi carp, and a replica of Japan's 900-year-old Byodo in the Temple of Equality. The original, made of wood, stands in Uji, on the outskirts of Kyoto; the Hawaiian version, made of concrete, was erected in 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii. It's not the same as seeing the original, but it's worth a detour. A 3-ton brass temple bell brings good luck to those who can ring it -- although the gongs do jar the Zen-like serenity of this little bit of Japan. If you are in a rush, you can sail through here in an hour, but you'll want to stay longer.

West Loch Municipal Golf Course
This par-72, 6,615-yard course located just 30 minutes from Waikiki, in Ewa Beach, offers golfers a challenge at bargain rates. The difficulties on this municipal course are water (lots of hazards), wind (constant trade winds), and narrow fairways. To help you out, the course features a "water" driving range (with a lake) to practice your drives. After a few practice swings on the driving range, you'll be ready to take on this unusual course, designed by Robin Nelson and Rodney Wright. In addition to the driving range, West Loch has practice greens, a pro shop, and a restaurant.

Make your reservations for discount hotel rooms in the Honolulu area, including:

Ohana Surf
The Ohana chain makes sure that it has a hotel to suit every budget and every need; this one has recently renovated kitchenettes in every room. The guest rooms, pool deck, and lobby went through extensive renovations in 1997; the rooms were outfitted with new bedspreads, chairs, lampshades, refurbished furniture, new TVs, and new fridges. The Surf is centrally located, across the street from the Kuhio Mall and 2 blocks from the beach; restaurants and nightlife are also within walking distance.

Doubletree Alana Waikiki
This boutique hotel is a welcome oasis of beauty, comfort, and prompt service. It's an intimate choice, offering the amenities of a much larger, more luxurious hotel at more affordable prices. The guest rooms are comfortable and homey; they're small, but make good use of the space and offer all the amenities you'd expect from a more expensive hotel. Many guests are business travelers who expect top-drawer service -- and the Alana Waikiki delivers. The staff is attentive to detail and willing to go to any lengths to make you happy. Waikiki Beach is a 10-minute walk away.Facilities: An excellent restaurant, Padovani's; wine bar offering appetizers; bar; outdoor heated pool; small fitness center; concierge; activity desk; car-rental desk; well-equipped business center; room service (7am-9pm); in-room massage; babysitting; laundry service; dry cleaning.

Aloha B&B
Perched on a hillside in the residential community of Hawaii Kai is this very affordable B&B, complete with swimming pool, panoramic ocean views and continental breakfast on the outdoor lanai. The two bedrooms (one with king bed, one with twins) share a bath and a half (no waiting for the toilet!). Just a 10-minute drive to snorkeling in Hanauma Bay and about a 15-minute drive to Waikiki and downtown Honolulu. Hostess Phyllis Young has lots of beach toys (including coolers and beach chairs) she will loan you for the day. She'll even do a load of laundry for you for $4. No smoking anywhere on the property.
