Rancho Bernardo Inn
Rancho Bernardo has a mature 18-hole, 72-par championship course with different terrains, water hazards, sand traps, lakes, and waterfalls. Lessons or 1-hour clinics with a pro, 2- to 4-day schools through the Golf University with meals and lodging included, and a standard golf package are available. Greens fees are $85 weekdays and $110 weekends, including a cart. Twilight rates (after 1pm winter, 2pm summer) are available.
San Diego Historical Society Museum
A good place to start if you are a newcomer to San Diego, the recently remodeled museum offers permanent and changing exhibits on topics related to the history of the region, from pioneer outposts in the 1800s to the present day. Many of the museum's photographs depict Balboa Park and the growth of the city. Plan to spend about 30 to 45 minutes here. Docent tours are available; call tel. 619/232-6203, ext. 117, for information and reservations. Books about San Diego's history are available in the gift shop, and the research library downstairs is open Thursday through Saturday.
Japanese Friendship Garden
Of the 11 1/2 acres designated for the garden, only 1 acre -- a beautiful, peaceful one -- has been developed. The garden's Information Center shows a model of the future installation, San-Kei-En (Three-Scenery Garden). A self-guided tour is available at the main gate. From the gate, a crooked path (to confound evil spirits, who move only in a straight line) threads its way to the information center in a Zen-style house; here you can view the most ancient kind of garden, the sekitei, made only of sand and stone. Refreshments are served on a Japanese-style deck to the left of the entrance. Japanese holidays are celebrated here, and the public is invited.
Elsbree House
Katie and Phil Elsbree have turned this modern Cape Cod-style building into an immaculate, exceedingly comfortable B&B, half a block from the water's edge in Ocean Beach. One condo unit with a private entrance rents only by the week; the Elsbrees occupy another. Each of the six guest rooms has a patio or balcony. Guests share the cozy living room (with a fireplace and TV), breakfast room, and kitchen. Although other buildings on this tightly packed street block the ocean view, sounds of the surf and fresh sea breezes waft in open windows, and a charming garden -- complete with trickling fountain -- runs the length of the house. This Ocean Beach neighborhood is eclectic, occupied by ocean-loving couples, dedicated surf bums, and the occasional contingent of punk skater kids who congregate near the pier. Its strengths are proximity to the beach, a limited but pleasing selection of eateries that attract mostly locals, and San Diego's best antiquing (along Newport Ave.).
W San Diego
The W brand's 17th hotel is known for its swanky nightlife, which on weekends means there's a line to get in to the packed lobby. But if you hold a reservation, go to the front of the line and let one of the many black-clad employees lead you past the velvet rope to the front desk, where check-in can be accomplished by shouting above the din. Your cheery room will be a mod beach cabana beamed into downtown, replete with sexy shower. Nouveau nautique is the theme, with aqua and sand tones accenting the whites, a window seat for gazing down on this languid corner of downtown, and a beach ball-shaped pillow, which should be the only exclamation point needed to remind you that this hotel is simply fun. If not, cordless phones, flat-screen TVs, and cheeky minibar items should seal the deal.You might sample the restaurant, Rice (the food gets mixed reviews), or enjoy its adjoining bar, where cocktail waitresses clad in leather hot pants and fishnets serve blue-tinged cotton-candy treats that float through the room like tiny psychedelic clouds. A DJ spins here while another mixes in the bar called the Living Room -- i.e., the lobby. Here, the path leading to the bathrooms is a catwalk with see-through plexi portholes underfoot. Then there's the Beach, up on the third floor, where the open-air bar has a sand floor (heated at night), a fire pit, and cabanas; drinks are served in plastic, so you can safely roam the terrace barefoot. The cacophony generally dies down on Sunday, when the contingent of mostly Los Angelenos departs, and for a few days the W is the very model of a proper business hotel -- albeit one with a (tiny) pool, a 24-hour open-air gym, and a bank of 18 video screens glowing with an idealized landscape of bubbles floating heavenward. Look closely and you'll notice that each bubble has a floating W logo within it. Self-absorbed? To the max. Fun? Check me in.
Sommerset Suites Hotel
This five-story all-suite hotel on a busy street was originally built as apartment housing for interns at the hospital nearby. Renovated in 1999, it retains a residential ambience and unexpected amenities such as huge closets, medicine cabinets, and fully equipped kitchens in all rooms (even dishwashers). Poolside barbecue facilities encourage warm-weather mingling. The hotel has a personal, welcoming feel, from the friendly staff to the snacks, soda, beer, and wine served each afternoon and the welcome basket with cookies and microwave popcorn. Rooms are oversized and comfortably furnished, and each has a private balcony. Be prepared for noise from the busy thoroughfare below leaking in, though. Just across the street you'll find several blocks' worth of restaurants and shops, plus a multiplex cinema. Guest services include a van to the airport, SeaWorld, the zoo, and Old Town ($5 per trip).
