International Center of Photography
The ICP is one of the world's premier educators, collectors, and exhibitors of photographic art. The state-of-the-art gallery space is ideal for viewing rotating exhibitions of the museum's 50,000-plus prints as well as visiting shows. The emphasis is on contemporary photographic works, but historically important photographers aren't ignored. A must on any photography buff's list.
Museum of Sex
How many cities can claim their own Museum of Sex? This one debuted in 2002 and despite its provocative title, offers a studied, historical look at the history of sex in our culture. The museum's first exhibit, NYC Sex: How New York City Transformed Sex in America, featured displays about S&M and 19th-century brothels and videos of Times Square in its sleazy heyday of the 1970s. In 2004, Sex Among the Lotus: 2,500 Years of Chinese Erotic Obsession opened, displaying explicit imagery dating from the 2nd century B.C. Don't miss a trip through the gift shop -- definitely not your typical museum shop. How about a $1,375 snakeskin souvenir to show your friends back home? Note: Many of the displays are very graphic, so the museum may not be for everyone.
Murray Hill Inn
Housed in a renovated five-story walk-up in a pleasant and quiet residential neighborhood, the Murray Hill Inn is shoestring basic -- but there's no arguing with its cleanliness, which is key when judging accommodations in this price range. Rooms are tiny and outfitted with not much more than either one or two beds with motel-standard bedspread and furnishings, a wall rack, a phone, and a small TV; most rooms with shared bathroom also have private sinks (request one when booking). These Euro-style rooms share the in-hall bathrooms that are new and spotless. Some of the doubles have an alcove that can accommodate a third traveler on a cot if you're on an extra-tight budget. Rooms with private bathrooms are definitely the nicest; they're spacious, with new bathrooms and dataports on the telephones. Most also have pullout sofas that can accommodate an extra traveler or two. Don't expect much in terms of facilities beyond a pleasant (if tiny) lobby, plus a plain downstairs sitting area with a vending machine, an ATM, and a luggage-storage area. Services are kept to a bare minimum to keep costs down, but the staff is personable.
Thirty Thirty
Thirty Thirty is just right for bargain-hunting travelers looking for a splash of style with an affordable price tag. The building -- which formerly housed the well-known Martha Washington women's hotel and the legendary nightclub Danceteria, where Madonna got her start -- was gutted, renovated, and redone with brand-new everything.The design-conscious tone is set in the loftlike industrial-modern lobby. Rooms are mostly on the smallish side, but do the trick for those who intend to spend their days out on the town rather than holed up here. They're done in a natural palette with a creative edge -- purplish carpet, khaki bedspread, woven wallpaper -- that comes together more attractively than you might expect. Configurations are split between twin/twins (great for friends), queens, and queen/queens (great for triples, budget-minded quads, or shares that want more spreading-out room). Nice features include cushioned headboards, firm mattresses, two-line phones, nice built-in wardrobes, and spacious, nicely tiled bathrooms. A few larger units have kitchenettes, great if you're staying in town for a while, as you'll appreciate the extra room and the fridge. No room service, but delivery is available from nearby restaurants.
Holiday Inn Wall Street
This is one of Lower Manhattan's most technologically advanced hotels. The comfortable queen-bedded rooms are stocked with everything an executive might need, including an 8-foot L-shaped workstation with desk-level inputs, dual-line portable phones, and the kind of office supplies you never bring but always need, such as paper clips and tape. About half of the rooms have PCs with Microsoft Word and Office applications and a CD drive. The top floor is dedicated to special SMART rooms, which feature Toshiba Satellite laptop computers (with carrying case), fax/printer/copiers, and other upgraded amenities, plus buffet breakfast. Room decor is chain standard all the way, but fresh and perfectly comfortable; an easy chair and ottoman expands seating options. Management is always staying on the cutting edge with such techno-toys as a "Pocket Concierge" plug-in in the lobby that allows you to download local information to your PDA; an ATM-style machine for one-touch credit card check-in (similar to a self-serve gas pump); and cellular connection services that allow you to forward your room calls to your cellphone.
