During your Boston vacation, don't miss these great establishments and attractions:

Boston Massacre Site
A ring of cobblestones on a traffic island marks the location of the skirmish that helped consolidate the spirit of rebellion in the colonies. On March 5, 1770, angered at the presence of royal troops in Boston, colonists threw snowballs, garbage, rocks, and other debris at a group of redcoats. The soldiers panicked and fired into the crowd, killing five men. Their graves, including that of Crispus Attucks, the first black man to die in the Revolution, are in the Old Granary Burying Ground. To continue on the Freedom Trail: Turn left onto Congress Street and walk down the hill.

Gibson House Museum
In the Back Bay, the Gibson House is an 1859 brownstone that embodies the word "Victorian." You'll see decorations of all kinds, including family photos and portraits, petrified-wood hat racks, a sequined pink-velvet pagoda for the cat, a Victrola, and an original icebox. Check ahead for the schedule of lectures and other special events.

Harvard University Art Museums
The Fogg Art Museum, the Busch-Reisinger Museum, and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum house some 160,000 works, from ancient sculptures to contemporary photos. The exhibit spaces also serve as teaching and research facilities. If you prefer to explore with a guide, take a tour of the Fogg weekdays at 11am, of the Busch-Reisinger weekdays at 1pm (both year-round), or of the Sackler at 2pm weekdays September through June, Wednesdays only in July and August. The Fogg Art Museum (32 Quincy St., near Broadway) is composed of two floors of galleries opening off an impressive 16th-century Italian stone courtyard. Each of the 19 rooms here displays something different -- among the offerings are 17th-century Dutch and Flemish landscapes, 19th-century British and American paintings and drawings, French paintings and drawings from the 18th century through the Impressionist period, and contemporary sculpture. Changing exhibits often draw on the museum's extensive collections of paintings, drawings, prints, and photos. The Busch-Reisinger Museum in Werner Otto Hall (enter through the Fogg) concentrates on the painting, sculpture, and decorative art of northern and central Europe, specifically Germany. Particularly notable are the early-20th-century collections, including works by Klee, Feininger, Kandinsky, and artists and designers associated with the Bauhaus. The Arthur M. Sackler Museum (485 Broadway, at Quincy St.) houses Asian, ancient, Islamic, and Later Indian art. Here you'll find internationally renowned Chinese jades, superb Roman sculptures, Greek vases, Korean ceramics, Japanese woodblock prints, and Persian miniature paintings and calligraphy.

Marriott Residence Inn Boston Harbor
Combining the familiar suburban brand and a prime urban location, the Residence Inn opened in 2003. It's the only chain hotel in Charlestown, and easy access to water transportation (especially in warm weather, when the water taxi stops at the hotel dock) makes it competitive with far more expensive downtown properties. Adjacent to the Charlestown Navy Yard, the hotel (which accommodates many guests on extended stays) consists of studio and one- and two-bedroom suites with full kitchens; many have harbor views. Even the smallest units, the studio suites, are generous in size. The lobby pool and fitness room adjoin the hotel dock and offer water views. Views from higher floors of the eight-story building are spectacular; the few units that don't overlook the harbor face the Zakim-Bunker Hill Bridge, the Charles River, and what remains of the Big Dig. My favorites are the east-facing rooms on the second floor, with huge windows that allow just-close-enough views of the action on the water. Patrons tend to be business travelers on weeknights and (especially in the summer) families on weekends. Prices listed here are for 1 to 4 nights; longer stays mean ever-greater discounts.

Best Western Boston/The Inn at Longwood Medical
Next to Children's Hospital in the Longwood Medical Area, this eight-story hotel is a good base for those with business at the hospitals. Beth Israel Deaconess and Brigham and Women's hospitals, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the Joslin Diabetes Center are within walking distance. Near museums, colleges, and Fenway Park, the hotel is about 20 minutes from downtown Boston by T.Guest rooms are quite large and furnished in contemporary style, and rates include free local phone calls. Try to stay on the highest floor possible, not just because the views are better but because the busy intersection of Longwood and Brookline avenues is less than scenic. Suites have kitchen facilities that make them a good choice for long-term guests. The hotel adjoins the Longwood Galleria business complex, which has a food court and shops, including a drugstore.Facilities: Restaurant (international); lounge; exercise room; access to nearby health club ($8-$10 per day); concierge; tour desk; airport shuttle; room service until 11pm; coin laundry; laundry service; same-day dry cleaning. Rooms for travelers with disabilities are available.

Fifteen Beacon
Nonstop pampering, high-tech amenities, and outrageously luxurious rooms make this boutique hotel the name to drop with the expense-be-hanged set. The 10-story hotel has attracted demanding travelers, especially businesspeople, since it opened in 2000. Management bends over backward to keep them returning, with attentive service and lavish perks -- for instance, at check-in, guests receive business cards listing the personal phone and fax numbers that they'll have during their stay. The individually decorated rooms contain queen-size canopy beds with Italian linens (300 thread count, of course), surround-sound stereo systems, gas fireplaces, and 4-inch TVs in the bathroom. "Studio" units have a sitting area. The lobby restaurant, though overpriced and a bit cramped, is one of the best places in the city to see (or be) movers and shakers, especially at breakfast.
