The Hammonds House Galleries & Resource Center of African-American Art
Occupying the 1857 Eastlake Victorian-style former home of Dr. Otis T. Hammonds, a black anesthesiologist and art patron, Hammonds House is a national center for the exhibition, preservation, research, and documentation of African-American art and artists. The permanent collection includes Hammonds' extensive compilation of works by African-American and Haitian artists, as well as his collection of African masks and carvings. These works are complemented by later acquisitions including pieces by Romare Bearden, William H. Johnson, Robert S. Duncanson, and Elizabeth Catlett. The permanent collection is shown on a rotating basis and is supplemented by exhibitions featuring the work of renowned black artists from all over the world. The Resource Center, housing documents on African-American art and artists, is open to the public by appointment.The house is located in the thriving West End neighborhood, which was declared a historic district in 1991. While you're in the area, take a look at the other lovingly restored Victorian bungalows and houses. A short walk away is the Atlanta University Center, the largest historically African-American education complex in the world, home to prestigious Morehouse College. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is Morehouse's most famous alumnus; a chapel was built on the campus to honor his memory.

The APEX (African-American Panoramic Experience) Museum
This museum chronicles the history of Sweet Auburn, once Atlanta's foremost black residential and business district, and serves as a national African-American museum and cultural center. The museum's Trolley Car Theater, a replica of a turn-of-the-century tram that ran on Auburn Avenue, presents a 12-minute multimedia presentation, Sweet Auburn: Street of Pride, that acquaints visitors with the area's history. Sweet Auburn history also comes to life in tableaux such as a replica of an Auburn Avenue barbershop and a re-creation of the 1920s-era Yates & Milton's Drugstore (Atlanta's first black pharmacy), featuring some original furnishings. There are interactive displays for children. The APEX recently added a tribute to the late Maynard Holbrook Jackson, Jr., Atlanta's first black mayor. Inquire about special events and workshops taking place during your visit to Atlanta.Across the street from the APEX Museum, at 100 Auburn Ave., is Herndon Plaza, where you can see a permanent exhibit on the Herndon family (former slave Alonzo F. An 11-story redbrick hotel, the Wyndham is close to many Midtown cultural attractions, including Piedmont Park and the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum. Ansley Inn
This 1907 yellow brick Tudor mansion, the former estate of department-store magnate George Muse, is located in Ansley Park, one of the city's most beautiful residential areas. Rooms in the main house are nicely decorated with antique pieces and mahogany four-poster beds. Several rooms have oak floors, some adorned with Oriental rugs, and a few have lofty cathedral ceilings and working fireplaces. The Ansley Room, on the third floor, offers a canopy bed (which is unfortunately rather narrow) and an interestingly angled ceiling. The rooms in what is called the "corporate wing" (actually just an addition out back) are not nearly as charming (in fact, they resemble motel rooms). One room is wheelchair-accessible.A full hot southern breakfast is served in a dining room furnished with a long English Chippendale-style table and Empire sideboards. Guests enjoy a welcome cocktail upon arrival as well as a nightly wine and cheese social in the beautiful living room, which boasts an 8-foot ceramic tile fireplace.

Howard Johnson Plaza Suites at Underground Atlanta
If huge, convention-oriented hotels turn you off, check out the Howard Johnson Plaza Suites. This 16-story hotel was originally a 1918 office building to which 10 stories were added in 1990. The style is elegant and understated, attracting a clientele that prefers the intimacy of a European-style hotel. Each suite has a small living room, a separate bedroom, and a marble bathroom, some with Jacuzzis.
